@CosmicJojo
Yes, I agree, Andy Burnham would probably be the best of the bunch. It’s deeply worrying, however, that current politicians lack the charisma and strength of will that, say, Thatcher or Blair had. Everyone’s either kowtowing wheedingly to their leader or worried about losing their seat. Churchill may have had his faults, particular with regard to Iran, but he inspired confidence and patriotism.

@Sleepyguy saidThis thread is a great illustration of how you as a conservative receive information. Both the Labour and Torries took heavy losses.
What does this mean for the UK? Will that Starmer moron go away now? Euroweenies please enlighten we American troglodytes.
But you seem unaware of this, probably because your partisan sources only reported Labour's losses. It fits the narrative you're hoping to hear.
Then two other right-wingers chimed in about the U.K. "waking up", unaware just badly Torries also lost. They were obviously unaware Torries ruled the U.K. for 14 of the last 16 years; so any problems the UK would be "waking up" from would be from policies mostly shaped by the conservative party.
Now, are any of you right-wingers going to use thread as a moment of self-reflection to examine why so you happily consume blatantly biased sources that only feed your own world view instead of objective information?
No. Of course not.
@vivify saidYep you're right. I saw a headline, probably a right wing one, of which the focus was trouble for Starmer. I was aware the winners were not Tories but rather Farage's Reform party. Please note I came HERE and asked the question, not some right wing news network. Anyway, just trying to hear a UK/European perspective. American media sucks.

So tell me if this is close to correct. Labour is to the left of our Dems, Tories are like our RINO Republican squishes, and Reform UK are like our populist MAGA Republicans. And now that Reform UK has gained so much ground, the Tories are going to have collaborate with Reform? Or, what? I'm legit trying to understand.
@Sleepyguy saidThey're free to call an election whatever they want, 2029 is the latest.
Thank you!
I read somewhere he said he wouldn't resign.
So Starmer will have to be forced out through some kind of no confidence vote or internal challenge, but Labour still controls until 2029. Any idea who would replace Starmer?
Council votes don't mean that much.
@Sleepyguy saidNothing changes until the next election. Farage had the Brexit party before, did well in council elections etc but rubbish at the general election polls. Reform seems different, people are tried of the conservative party, people that have voted for them for years.

I think that'll be the change, not many will go from labour to reform but a lot of lost conservative votes leading probably to a complete mess.
@Sleepyguy saidLiberal Democrats and Green party also performed well; but Reform Party had the most wins. And they are right-wing, even more so than the Tories. This would be like if Trump started the "MAGA Party" and beat the Republicans.

You're pretty much right with where Labour and Tories fall politically. And Tories will definitely work with Reform; if they start a coalition , they will be unbeatable and probably reign for at least another two decades like Conservatives have done.
So after a 2 year break, right-wingers control the UK again after already being in power for 14 years. So any chaos in the country that you've been hearing is not the fault of leftists.
Keep that in mind.
@vivify saidThese were only local and regional elections; Labor still holds a wide majority in the House of Commons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parliament_of_the_United_Kingdom

And they don't have to call another election until 2029 which is eons in politics.
@no1marauder saidI find that what is going on with Mamdani and Hochul in NYC to be MUCH more fun to watch. Should be for you fellows, they are REALLY targeting the upper middle class to get their money..... People normal like you and me, not just the big-time billionaires. They are leaving, anyway. No, they are going to try to tax 2nd homes worth a. measly $1M or. more. Several hundred thousand of them.

Time better spent, on the home front, than what UK problems are. Who cares.
@AverageJoe1 saidI do. Can we have just one thread that's not about American politics please?

@Sleepyguy saidWhichever most interesting would get my vote. What is the hottest thing going on in UK right now, am not much familiar, bring us up to speed
I do. Can we have just one thread that's not about American politics please?
@AverageJoe1 saidA right wing populist who convinced a majority of Brits through a referendum that they would he better off leaving the EU, yknow, Brexit, well his party did really well in the council elections and stands poised to he the UK's next Prime Minister if the Party he leads, Reform UK can translate that win in a general election.

But he tells whopping lies, sold Brexit as an improvement in living standards which has not eventuated and is anti immigrant and dog whistles the preference of white people. Remind you of someone? Well to the rest of the world he looks a lot like your guy!
@vivify saidDefinitely is a dangerous word to use in politics. A lot of members of reform defected from the conservatives to join reform. I don't see them being the best of friends anytime soon. The conservative party is dead and they know it. Will be labour Vs reform in the next election with the greens, lim dem and conservative parties picking up the scraps. But a lot can happen in 3 years... Maybe farage gets bored and reform collapses. Wouldn't be the first time.

Looks like labour are pushing to get starmer removed, doesn't change anything. Same as the conservatives removing Boris, may etc etc didn't change anything.
@kmax87 saidI wud like rohave a general understanding of what’s going on there, as I see blurbs of it in the Wall Street, etc. First thing that pops out is your flippiant “dog whistling” comme, which ,lcomes across as being Sauce /ive I/ of the legitimate concerns that are held by some of their citizens.

And not being up on this, I have to think that’s a pretty one-sided interpretation. I know that A lot of ordinary Brits supported Brexit because they wanted more national sovereignty, more control over immigration policy, and less decision-making from Brussels…..not because they were racist or anti-immigrant. There is that side.
I wish our problems in the USA were as simple as theirs are. It is unfortunate that our country has to be involved in just about everything in the world, to keep the peace. The more I have known the people on this forum the more common sense I have developed, which makes me aghast at just about everything everybody writes.
@The-only-Mr-T saidIf Starmer is removed or steps down, is the assumption that one of the other Labour cabinet heads (Ministers?) will take his place until 2029? Is there any chance of a snap election before then?

@Sleepyguy saidPossible but unlikely I'd say. They know if they called at election now they'd lose. So why would they do that?

More likely starmer gets booted out before the year end and some other idiot takes over with the same $hlt$how that is recent UK politics continuing.
