With the apparent victory of Rafael Correa in the Ecuador elections, yet another country has been added to the list of South American nations with either leftist, or center-left, elected presidents. Almost all of South America is being swept away by the growing leftist tide. The list includes:
Ecuador: Rafael Correa
Venezuala: Hugo Chavez
Bolivia: Evo Morales
Brazil: Luiz da Silva
Chile: Michelle Bachelet
Argentina: Nestor Kirchner
Uruguay: Tabare Vazquez
Peru: Alan Garcia
Guyana: Bharrat Jagdeo
Not only is she a leftist, but Michele Bachelet, of Chile, is the only world leader that I know of who is a self-described agnostic. They've come a long way since the dark days of Pinochet. Kudos to them.
With this kind of momentum, will South America be able to realize its latent potential and stand on its own, or will it backslide to its traditional place as the whipping boy of US imperialism? I would like to think that after decades of countless juntas and an endless string of petty tyrants, that they have finally turned the corner toward charting their own destiny. Only time will tell.
It will be easier with more of them reaching power, since the strategy
to choke those regimes is isolationism from the world powers and
the transnational corporations, shaking up the markets in order to
capitals to fly.
If Latin Americans work towards cooperation and brotherhood, control
the powerful elites, and ground that very Latin American flaw of chaotic
social organization, the future looks promising.
Way to go, Latin America! Shame that the rotten regime of Mexico
didn't let the giant get a leftist government.
Originally posted by SeitseI also wonder to what degree the rise of elected South American presidents coincides with the demise of some of the continent's guerilla movements. In Peru, Comrade Artemio, the last active Shining Path guerilla leader, has offered a truce with the government. With only 200 to 300 fighters left, they are clearly a spent force. That leaves the FARC as South America's only major active guerilla movement. Clearly the history of Leninism and Maoism set the entire leftist movement back by decades. Now that its pitiable remains have largely been swept aside, I wonder if some real progress can be made.

I think it can, mate. The prolonged colonialist fashion in which the
mighty ones have kept LA for more than 500 years has proven to
be uneffective for the masses, so... what can we lose by trying
something different? I think some real social programs and stronger
regulation on United Fruit-like corporations shall benefit the people.
The intents have happened before, but they were crushed by the
North, i.e. Allende in Chile. This time, however, the circumstances are
different and, I insist, it makes a difference to have more neighbors
in the same trend in order to resist the pressure from outside and
inside.
Of course nothing will change drastically, because drastic changes
require drastic measues and these days revolutions are hard to
organize successfully.
Anyway, let's see what happens. Also, the good thing is that the ones
reaching power are NO longer (some of them at least) the old style
leftists but much more 'third way' believers, away from maoist or
troskist rethoric, market conscious, and so on and so forth.
I hope democracy finally finds its way in LA.

The price of the jeans never go down even when the cost of making them does. Panamanians will thrive because they are better educated than their Latin cousins except for maybe the Cubans. Also the US has had its presense there for almost 100 years and left a pretty good infrastructure. Costa Rica for the simple fact that they have had many years of peace not like their cousins who fought wars in the 70's and 80's.
The longer there is peace and a healthy economy down there, the better the education level will become.

Wow.
The only chief of state to call Bush what he is.
The only to use it's country assets for the peasant instead of being stole by Companies.
The only problem with Chavez is that he's in control of Venezuela which has 30% of the oil in the world.
Chavez kicked the corrupted ones who were emptying Venezuela assets to make american companies richer.
Africa needs a Chavez to kick out all the European/american companies and use their assets (gold, oil, uranium, diamonds,...) for their own people.
The day the African Chavez will rise, the balance of forces in the world will change and we will start begging Africa for their minerals.
Off course the next day that this African Chavez will be elected he will be killed by CIA - but thats another story 😀
Turn off Fox News for an hour and have a look here, you'll see how much you are lied, you'll see how much you are manipulated, you'll see how much you got to be behind Chavez.

Each to their own...I guess...
Some people get great joy out of watching "Friends". Now, I'd rather have my ball tortured in an Israeli gaol than watch that doo-goody-BS, but, each to their own...
Other people get pure bliss out of watching a film and writing to IMDB.com that they saw a car in the background as Aragorn throws an apple to Pippin. Personally, I find picking nits whilst watching a film a load of nit-picking. Each to their own, methinks...
But politics gives me great pleasure!
I get high blood pressure, I suffer from sweaty palms and I digress in massive alcohol binges every time there's an election. And I don't care if it's Britain, the US or Zimbabwe (although, even I have to admit that those one's are just a little monotonous).
But within politics there are things that amuse me more than others, and I think the greatest amusement of my life to present is the growth of left-wing politics in Latin America.
After the US trained and funded right-wing groups, dictators and what-not there to spread their evil web of capitalism and in so doing killing hundreds of thousands of civilians; after the US spent so much tax payers money supporting bastards like Pinnochet; all in aid of their wider plan of free trade for US businesses... nothing brings a smile to my face more than watching the whole arena turn socialist and US interests sink in a mire of Iraquee bogness.
"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war." --Pat Robertson, calling for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, Aug. 22, 2005
