Furthermore , all that money that's been spent in the various space programs has fostered great advances in areas like refractories , metalergy , computers , etc , etc . The computer tech advances made in the space program are alive and well in your pc . Weather satelites and computer models of weather systems like hurricanes , tornados , and monsoons save thousands of lives each year . The research on flame retardant materials to keep astronauts alive is being used daily to protect firefighters . The advances in refractories since the 60's and 70's has argueably caused the greatest advances in modern foundry techniques than Bessimer Steel .

I don't doubt that every $ spent will return 10 fold to the real advancement of the quality of life for everyone .

hammer, the rest of the craft stays behind and takes in data.
This is an important probe because right now there is an asteroid
coming at earth which passes by shortly and they know it will miss
but it swings by again in the year 2024. Right now it is up in the air
whether it will hit then. It is vital to figure out what we can do if
push comes to shove on this issue. The dinosaurs sure didn't have
a chance to stop the Chixulub asteroid 65 million years ago but we
have a real chance to stop one. We want to know if we can simply
shove a 10 megatonner up its butt or do you have to take a giant
tennis net and sling it away with a rocket, we just don't know yet.
If the asteroid is a big sandpile just cramming a bomb inside could
just spread it out a bit and it still kills life on earth so thats why we
need to know what these things are made of inside.
BTW speaking of tennis, Federer just won his third wimbleton.
He is one of the great ones in tennis.

Obviously then, you wanted public sentiments rather than facts or clearer understanding.
OK. Well, I'll try to assume the role of a typically uninformed individual:
"I must say, banging rocks together in the sky is just not on! What on earth do they think they're doing now? Isn't it bad enough that we have to defend our animals from those cosmetics experiments (though my hair does look nice) without having to worry about nuclear explosions in space which could blow up the world without even telling us first? And what about that new girl in Coronation Street? What a cow! If you ask me, she deserves everything that's coming to her. Bitch."

Originally posted by fiestaWhat a silly, silly attitude you have. Did it ever occur to you that knowledge of how to deflect or break-apart a comet is just knowledge that may be wasted or not. Your attitude is typical of people who see no use of acquiring knowledge that doesn't affect your village immediately and to your benefit. What a silly, small attitude. By the very nature of reality, one never knows which knowledge is priceless and which is silly and worthless. But... Bowman is right and you are dead wrong. Better to have "too much" of it than "none of it".

Bowman gets a rec from me for seeing the obvious. Ignorance kills. Total ignorance makes silly people "popular".
