(CNN) -- One person was killed and five others were wounded, three critically, in a shooting at the Jewish Federation in downtown Seattle, Washington, police said.

Police have detained a suspect who is a U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent.

"This is a crime of hate, and there's no place for that in the city of Seattle," Mayor Greg Nickels said. "This was a purposeful hateful act, as far as we know, by an individual acting alone."

The attack promoted Seattle police to increase security at Jewish temples and Islamic mosques around the city, Chief Gil Kerlikowske said.

"We are also protecting mosques, because there is always the concern of retaliatory crime or retaliatory incident," Kerlikowske said.

The suspect walked into the office building just after 4 p.m. Friday armed with a large caliber semi-automatic handgun and opened fire after asking for the manager, Kerlikowske said.

The shooter laid down his handgun and surrendered to SWAT officers about 12 minutes after the shooting began, Kerlikowske said.

The belief that it was a hate crime is based on what the suspect said to a 911 operator and supervisor when he took a phone from an office worker who called the emergency number.
Kerlikowske would not say specifically what the man said.

All of the shooting victims -- including the one killed -- were women, he said. Most of the 18 people in the building were female, but there was no indication he was specifically targeting them, the chief said.

The wounded were taken to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center following the shooting, the hospital said. Three of them were in critical condition with injuries to their abdomens.

The other two victims were in satisfactory condition, the hospital said, including a 37-year-old woman who is 20 weeks pregnant. She was shot in the arm, while the other woman sustained a knee injury.

Assistant Police Chief Nick Metz said police had no specific information about any threats, but his department did issue an alert Thursday "reminding officers to be vigilant to monitor synagogues and mosques around the city, Chief Gil Kerlikowske said.

Kerlikowske acknowledged that the suspect was a Muslim, but he did not reveal his name. He said there was no reason to believe more than one person was involved in the attack. Another law enforcement official told CNN the suspect was of Pakistani descent.

FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Laura Laughlin said the suspect was a U.S. citizen, not from Seattle.

Robert Jacobs, Pacific Northwest Regional director for the Anti-Defamation League, told CNN the group has been warning Jewish institutions to be wary and ensure they have adequate security because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. If they cannot, he said, it would be better for Jews "not to congregate in one location that might be an obvious site." End of article.

Starting to look like Europe, folks. Let's look at the pieces of the puzzle: Pakistani, Muslim, murder, shooting women, and a pregnant one at that (typical coward). I bet if the S.W.A.T. team hadn't arrived in time, a few heads would have been missing. We need to start shipping these scumbags back to their homeland or Europe (they'll try to 'rehabilitate' him) before something like this happens again.

Racist tripe. He's a US citizen so he can't be deported. And why would you want to deport him? Try him for his crimes.

Unfortunately you missed out one of the pieces i.e US citizen.

You can't deport criminals just because they are not from US descent or you'd have to deport all your criminals which might be nice for you but not too great for the rest of us.

I think Chance just wants every Muslim deported.

There was a 1600% increase in hate crimes against Muslims in the US in the first few months after the September 11 attacks. At least three Muslims were murdered by folks like Chance "avenging" the attacks (probably more though in 4 other cases the motives may have been mixed). hrw.org/reports/2002/usahate

Oddly enough, Chance never called for deportation of the Americans who committed these crimes.

not only that but some sikh guy was also murdered at that time because THICK americans like CHANCRE dont know the difference between Muslims and Sikhs as they judge people by their colour.

Another point is that ..is not 99.9% of americans immigrants from Europe and the true American population is infact the 'red indians'. I wonder where Chancre's blood line is from?

The American Indian population in the U.S. hovers at 1 to 1.5%; also most immigrants from Mexico and central America are Mestizo (part Indian); then, we have the ~12% of African origin and a significant and growing Asian population.

I'd say that considerably less than 99% of American are originally from Europe, although 92-95% of CEOs, members of Congress, and salaried professionals are Euro-Americans. Nevertheless, this percentage seems to be on the verge of dropping substantially, as the distribution of ability (in which Euro-Americans are languishing) replaces racial privilege as the basis for hiring and promotion. Even the Republican party, for example, has promoted record numbers of non-Euros to high positions in the otherwise supremely incompetent Bush regime.

"Hispanics constitute the largest minority group in the United States. As of July 1, 2004, Hispanics accounted for 14.1 % of the population, around 41.3 million people. Hispanic growth rate over the July 1, 2003 to July 1, 2004 period was of 3.6 % - higher than any other ethnic group in the United States, and in fact more than three times the rate of the nation's total population (at 1.0 😵. The projected Hispanic population of the United States for July 1, 2050, is of 102.6 million people. According to this projection, Hispanics will constitute 24% of the nation’s total population on that date."

I think the U.S. should buy some island from Mexico (we can rent them the 'Islas Marías' and sent there ANY hate criminal, including KKK). As a Mexican, I don't like our neighbor to crack or suffer, because if there is a catastrophe there Mexico will be invaded by illegal aliens from the U.S. LOL! Kidding... seriously, my country needs a healthy, pacific, calm and progressist U.S.
