Stem cells vote sets up veto showdown

Congress cleared legislation Thursday easing rules for federal funding of embryonic stem cell research -- setting up a veto battle with the White House. One bill supporter said: "Because of the stubbornness of one man -- President Bush -- people continue to suffer." But the president said the bill means taxpayers would "be compelled to support the deliberate destruction of human embryos."

Now here's what I'm thinking. Bush's stated reason for not allowing federal funding of stem cell research seems to me so wonderfully sound, I think it should be expanded to human life in general and become the first criterion that must be satisfied before approving any federal funding proposal. And so...

1) The US military. As a taxpayer, I object to my taxes going toward the deliberate killing of already-born humans (including women and children) by federally funded US military operations. Pull the plug on the military.

2) Foreign aid to Israel and various dictatorships. Again, my tax dollars are going toward propping up client states with funds and hardware that in turn go toward "security" or "anti-terrorist" operations that almost invariably result in the deaths of innocent bystanders -- like, you know, already-born babies and such.

3) The CIA. Well what can I say? This organization has orchestrated the establishment of more vicious dictatorships than I can count, and those dictatorships have gone on to write whole chapters in the annals of human savagery with the blood of their victims. Let funding of the CIA be voluntary. In the tax forms just ask: "Would you like to have a portion of your taxes go toward funding the CIA or would you like a $50 refund?" See what happens. I'll bet the CIA couldn't do much damage with a budget that could barely buy a studio apartment in New Orleans. Of course the CIA's budget is kept secret so we'll never know.

If anyone would like to add to my list, by all means go nuts...

your list is pants, and I for one, will not add to it.

First of all, in the papers today, stem cell research is now possible from skin cells taken from adults, so no need to destroy embryos.

Second, Israel is not a dictatorship.

Third, I don't know where America would be without the CIA, and I am not American, but I know that I would rather live in Britain with well funded security services preventing terrorist attacks, than not.

As far as I'm concerned you can take your $50 refund and buy ice-cream with it.

Good bye

Yes. By all means, let's cut the schlong off of the military and the CIA. Fabulous idea.

Do you know that Bush is the only President ever to fund stem cell research?

No, "credible" meaning posts from people who grasp what I'm really trying to say in my (I thought rather transparently) irony-laden message.

Sorry, the irony doesn't come through. Maybe you should pepper it with emoticons.

That's not true. Why do you make false claims?

The problem is, the only people that would find your post funny are those on the hard left. It has a very narrow appeal.

Similar to racist people finding humor in a bad black joke.

Its not that we don't see what you're trying to do, its that the post isn't funny.

If you think I was trying to be funny then once again you've missed the point. You don't find Bush's withholding of federal funding for stem cell research because "some taxpayers would object" to be nigh the pinnacle of abject absurdity?

[/i]It's a constant source of amusement that the pro-life lobby = the Christian right = the republican vote = killing civilians.

It's very poetic.
