The two major types are:

- competent
- incompetent

Everything else is simply a subdivision of one of the above of secondary importance.

An incompetent teacher cannot be a disciplinarian because s/he doesn't have the students' respect.

An incompetent teacher cannot really be "cool" without becoming a laughingstock.

Personally, I think that being competent at teaching is one of the hardest fields to be competent at.

The Radical-Chic Douchebag: Got nothing good to say about the country that gives him the freedom to criticize it, but brags up other countries that would put him in a labor camp if he said anything bad about them. Tells kids Cuba is the land of rainbows and lollypops where everybody is happy and content.

The Affirmative Action College Grad: Can't complete a sentence without a dozen grammar and spelling errors, usually hoping for an administrative position because he barely knows the basics of his chosen major. Doesn't really teach at all, just gives kids a lot of pre-canned handouts. If passed over for promotion can evolve into Radical-Chic Douchebag.

Ah, the Commie Activist is another. The second type you mention does not depend on Affirmitive Action. They exist in all kinds of colors.

....
respect can be gained thru fear, if school policy supports it.

If you read the paper lately, you need to include the lech. If I had a kid in high school right now, I'd be tempted to check his or her cell phone to make sure they're not in a fling with one of their teachers.

I think you have a great dividing scheme for which there are two responses. People who agree with you and people who dont...😛

But seriously I tend to agree with Zeeb and would add that more often than not its a teacher unwilling or unable to actually diagnose the right strategy to implement will resort to an authoritarian disciplinary approach. They either were brought up in an earlier age where authority = discipline = respect and they are now unwilling to adapt to newer expectations on the part of students to be more fully engaged in the learning process, or they hide their incompetence with bluster and control, thinking that molding obedient automatons, a great teacher them makes.

[edit] like that lovely turn of phrase...?

My best teachers were committed teachers. My worst teachers were only in it for the money - and since teaching is not all that well paid in Zambia, they were not that good at anything in particular.

There are San teachers, who are indigenous, and non-San teachers who are invaders from West Africa.

At least this is what a study of mitochondrial DNA teaches us.
