in england they are going to go the american way and have 3 live debates between the 3 partys with a selected audiance. Does this mean the debate will be of no use to anyone as they will know the questions before it starts, and vet any ones they do not like,,,,, Remember when thatcher did a debate live and the public tore her to pieces then that stopped it happening again.
our american personal here do they mean much to you or are they too staged to be of any use.

Many European countries also have such debates (and probably for longer than the US), why do you call it the "American way"?

In most formats, the debaters know the order of the issues but in a very general way. They start with an opening statement and then they debate freely. If the opposing party wants to push the hard questions, they will.

thanks for the input. think i called it the american way as i seem to view the tv format coming from america going back to kennedy v nixon
yes the politians will question each other similar to question time in parliment which they debate what they want to and go round the world with answers [watched it a few times] but they hate the people asking as they carnt score points as thatcher found out.

Only in England? At least the rest of the UK will be spared it then.
