A few years ago a farmer was put in prison because he shot a boy in the back trying to rob his house.

No.

Its a tragehty sure. But who cares. If someone invades your house you should be allowd to eliminate them at all costs, for all you know they could have a gun or knife.

For somebody who's located on the moral highground, you sure do spout a lot of right-wing trailer-trash crap around...

The farmer in question had had his right to own shotguns removed from him due to earlier incidents. He had been boasting that if one of the gypsies came onto his property that he would shoot them. He shot the child in question when he was trying to climb out of a window, and as you observed in the back. The shocking thing is that he was released from prison.

if that was your brother who was shot would you still be speaking the same rubbish? also, you said they might have a gun... not they do have one... in the eyes of the law you are allowed to defend yourself... the law also states with reasonable force... i think shooting someone dead because they wander into your field is taking the law out of all proportion

There can only be one moral Highlander...

More seriously, people say you need to think of it from the point of view of the family of the kid who got shot, but also, there is a different frame of mind after you've been robbed by people breaking into your house multiple times, as both the farmer and I have. i'm actually not sure where I stand on this issue, but I know that if I'd had a gun and seen one of the people that robbed me leaving through my window, I'd probably have shot them too, although I might have some moral qualms after the fact if the kid died like in this case.

Nonsense -- Brother Edwin's home is his castle. Moreover, he should move to Texas or Florida if he wants the full weight of the law on his side the next time an intruder attempts to rob or burglarize his home and he wants to protect his property. When the state has a monopoly on the use of force then you get a situation like in Britain where robbery, burglary and home invasion have risen.

Key words being ... "shot a boy IN THE BACK"

you gotta drag 'em inside and make sure you kill 'em, that way when/if it gets to court the judge will only hear one side of the story .. yours.

....as opposed to that Texan oasis of Dallas

From 1998 until 2005 (the most recent year with available statistics), the city of Dallas has had the highest overall crime rate for the nine United States cities with over 1 million people.[51] Violent crime in Dallas was also ranked #1 during the same time period. Murders peaked at 500 in 1991. It then fluctuated from 227 in 2000 to 240 in 2001, 196 in 2002, 223 in 2003, 275 in 2004, and finally 198 in 2005, marking a sharp decline over the two previous years. However, Dallas was again ranked in 2005 as the most dangerous city out of the ten largest cities in the United States.

Alas, all places have their good features as well as bad. In the case of Dallas, the increase in crime (and other social ills) is primarily due to the large surge of illegal aliens. Still, I would argue that our fair burg is a garden spot compared to what our neighbor to the south endures: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/05/AR2006020500884.html

Is crime on the rise in Britain?
What about in Scandanavia, Holland and Germany? France?

Funnily enough, Britain is the most right-wing and capitalist of all these countries...and has the only rising crime rate. And highest teenage preganancy rate. And highest drugs use. And most alcohol abuse.

Funny that? Funny that Britain and the US have so much in common, uh?

Funny old world, really. When you think about it. Really.

A debate on whether a talented boy band can return and be taken seriously would be more interesting.

My brother used to commit crime to support a heroin addiction(well we never knew for sure but where else would he get the money), and if he had been killed by any of the people he took from it would be a trageghty but I would completly empasise with the killer.
