Like Israel, it has become impossible to criticise its behaviour, for in doing so, you have become a psychological hater.
To translate in historic terms, Churchill was suffering from HDS. And so was the US president… and, well, basically the whole of the world.
So who is right and who is wrong in this only-existing in the minds of MAGA theory?
Well, Lo! And behold!
There actually psychological parameters one can take into account. Let me sum them up for you:
When people become completely adamant that someone can do no wrong, they are usually experiencing the "halo effect" combined with intense emotional attachment. Psychologically, this blinds them to flaws and turns defending that person into a core part of their own identity.
Several powerful psychological mechanisms explain how this happens:
The Halo Effect: A cognitive bias where your overall impression of a person (e.g., they are charismatic or successful) makes you assume all their other traits are universally positive.
Confirmation Bias: The brain actively seeks out and remembers information that proves the person is great, while completely filtering out, rationalizing, or ignoring any evidence of negative behavior.
Identity Protection: When someone invests heavily in a relationship, idolized public figure, or leader, admitting that person has flaws feels like admitting they themselves were wrong or foolish.
Sunk Cost Fallacy: The subconscious drive to justify past investments—whether that is time, emotion, or loyalty. The more someone has invested in a person, the harder it is to walk away or acknowledge faults.
Cognitive Dissonance: When faced with undeniable negative facts about the person, the brain experiences mental discomfort. To resolve this, the mind invents extreme justifications or conspiracy theories to protect their idealized image.
Ultimately, this unwavering devotion serves an emotional need for the observer, providing them with a sense of safety, belonging, or certainty, making objective reality very difficult to accept.
I suggest serious soul searching and realising what you have become, before screaming TDS again…

It's hard to escape any "derangement syndrome".
I used to be a hardcore Christian, and my religion was tied to my identity, culture, friends and family. Denying my religion meant denying my entire culture and all the people I knew. I also used many of the arguments and justifications for the religion that I now find stupid.
Somehow, through my own personal logical introspection, I was able to come to some realizations. But no one else I knew from religious life did the same.
I wonder if for some people it's just not possible to escape their "derangement syndrome". There's too much at stake, too many relationships at risk, even if they do secretly know something is wrong. Marriages, friends, family, in some cases jobs.
My father-in-law is a tough, hardline SOB and his wife, who clearly doesn't care about politics, will defend Trump when he's around. She could not maintain her sanity (or possibly safety) if she openly denied Trump.
The Fox News folks are in the same boat. They clearly know they're defending trash but have no choice. All their right-wing constituents, followers, friends, etc., require defending a convicted felon, no matter what facts say. Their careers are over if they do otherwise.
@vivify saidThere is a great deal of truth in this. Trump appeals to people, and equally so repels other people, on a visceral level, not rationally.

Rationally, the man is zero. Just listen to his shark/battery rant, and you cannot doubt that the man is certifiably stupid.
I hold the press largely responsible for his rise--they keep on sanewashing his drivel.

Everyone there has probably been told to only disclose his marks there if they want to be deported.

quote
I have always thought it was a most valuable trait to recognize reality and not to pursue delusions. But when I now think over my life up to and including the years of imprisonment, there was no period in which I was free of delusory notions. .... The departure from reality, which was visibly spreading like a contagion, was no peculiarity of the National Socialist [Nazi] regime. But in normal circumstances people who turn their backs on reality are soon set straight by the mockery and criticism of those around them, which makes them aware that they have lost credibility. In the Third Reich there were no such correctives, especially for those who belonged to the upper stratum. On the contrary, every self-deception was multiplied as in a hall of distorting mirrors, becoming a repeatedly confirmed picture of a fantastical dream world which no longer bore any relationship to the grim world outside.
end quote
Albert Speer, Inside the Third Reich
What cultists don't see is the grim world inside the cult. It gives them the security of simple answers to every question, but the price is high, and Shav's opening list (cognitive dissonance, etc. etc.) is pretty solid inventory of all things one has to accept to stay in the cult.
