I know some Ukrainians are understandably saying "show no mercy" despite the pleas of some young Russians and even at least one Russian officer --
But, I hope the Ukrainians don't take the bait. Take out their fuel but not their people -- don't give them any more of a pretext.
Really very similar to US and NATO not implementing a no-fly zone.
As Mr. Kasparov said, "Every country has its own mafia. Putin’s Russia is the first where the mafia has its own country."
I feel sorry for the artists, writers, musicians, chess-players, scientists, engineers, and all the Russian people who keep their mouths shut for self-protection, just as they have done for decades and centuries -- and I say that knowing the same goes on and has gone on over here in the USA.
Following on from this, I think Putin is trying to provoke NATO to get involved as a pretext for him to escalate things.
There is some speculation that he might have cancer, which would add another explanation for his "long table" meetings (i.e., because his immune system might be suppressed).
Maybe Putin sees the end is coming and wants to take millions of other people with him out of spite.
@kevin-eleven saidIf the Russians choose to surrender let them live but don’t waste a military opportunity out of softheartedness

@kevin-eleven saidThe only way to free them is to do what we are doing and weaken the Putin regime to the point of internal collapse. The Russian people had a very brief flirtation with true democracy in between the soviet era and the oligarchs and their chosen one Putin. Like the German ruling class who thought that they could control their little lance corporal during the thirties Putin turned that power relationship on its head.
