The people whom I've met who grew up under communism (e.g. Slovakia, Hungary, Russia) said that the worst thing was how they ended up spying on each other.
Neighbors watched each other for signs of unorthodoxy because turning someone in to the party was one of the few ways to get a better standard of living.
