Last Saturday at a packed charity auction in New Plymouth a printed photo of JA (infamous picture of JA in Muslim fancy dress) was expected to be the show stopper - charity organisers must’ve been ecstatic with anticipation after a photo of King Koroki being carried to his grave up Mt Taupiri sold in spirited bidding for well over $10,000 and bidding was very brisk overall.
Enter the JA photo. Auctioneers called for an opening bid of $10,000, $8,000, $6000, well has anyone got $5000 to start me off. Silence, the auctioneer kept dropping the ask down and down in an embarrassed silence until finally bidding was kicked off at $200. We knew there were some present who wanted to buy it just to 🔥 it but legend has it a local Labour Party staffer was the underbidder to local Labour MP Glen Bennett who, in a rare public appearance, now owes the charity $1400, the eventual sale price. Presumably they bought it to make sure it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands but were too cheap to make a proper go of it. Just how did they win the New Plymouth seat at the last election one wonders.
