@the-grifter
From what I read in the Swedish press, it is not likely to happen. Let's hope the negotiations will result in something good for all parties and that America stays away from what is not theirs. Military actions are not the best solution even if your president seems to believe that.
@the-grifter saidLet's hope common sense will rule this matter.
@Torunn
treaty rights are a product of diplomacy.
Denmark can break the treaty if they choose to do so.
there would be consequences for that of course.
@Torunn saidThats wishful thinking. I was reading up on this issue and it appears Trump is hellbent on getting some kind of control of Greenland. Denmark and NATO countries on the whole will be well advised to put on their negotiating caps so that some good can come of it instead of confrontation. Trump will win if there is confrontation. USA and Europe need to be allies regardless of what happens. Falling out over Greenland is going to be loss for Europe, not USA.

@Rajk999 saidTrump wants many things in spite of what many Americans feel. He acts for himself, it's all about him.

what will happen when the Danish pm meets with the president this week will be a mutual understanding that nato will drift west to Greenland and after american development of the mineral rights the citizens of denmark and Greenland will get rich on their share of the money to be paid. each place will have it's integrity but all will understand that it will be American forces that have the military umbrella of Greenland and thus the chinese and Russian ships that currently patrol north of Greenland will only have polar bears to take pictures of before they sail home.
@the-grifter saidAs long as all parties agree, which doesn't seem to be the case right now.

@Torunn
the president is a businessman. you negotiate from a high position until you find the point where the other side is finally willing to tell you what they really want from the deal and then you close the deal so that everyone takes away from the table something of value.
remember, trump spent his life as a builder in the new York/new Jersey area. construction, trash, hotel unions, etc. what do you think he was dealing with....the Mafia as well as honest people.
the president knows how to close a deal even when their are seemingly obstacles that others would walk away from.
@Torunn saidIm not an authority on that, but I can say that Trump intends to do what he thinks is in the best interest of the USA. The Greenland issue is about US security re Russia and China being able to access shipping routes. I dont know the details.
Are the Americans irrelevant to Trump?
More than half of the US population is oblivious about world affairs, so what they want may not be relevant.
@the-grifter saidAs I said, all parties should agree to a good deal which I don't think they will yet. Don't overrate Trump and underestimate other actors, they are smart people too, and they have integrity and responsibilities.

@Rajk999 saidAnd there you have a dictator ignoring the American population.

@Torunn saidYes, you are right, but again, that has nothing to do with the negotiation between Denmark and Trump. I hope they are smart enough to understand Trump. Badmouthing Trump is going to be a mistake.
And there you have a dictator ignoring the American population.
I know you enjoy doing that but in the actual discussion among the leaders, its useless.
