Some generation, now or in the future, will see an end to the use of technologically based 'toys', cell phones, gps, laptops, Ipads, Ebooks, etc.

To paraphrase, the higher they are, the harder they fall.

What will this hypothetical future generation do to survive if they were all, for instance, connected together with nanobots to effectively be telepathic, the ultimate cell phone, as just one example.

Since all civilizations have a start and a finish, what happens when the end of Rome times for these people come to them after centuries of technological development?

Not sure I see the toys as being what would hurt us most if civilization ground to a halt. The things that come more to my mind would be starvation, war, and spread of disease that we'll no longer have immunities to.

In comparison, the loss of tech toys seems minor.

It sounds like you have been reading the novels of The Change by S.M. Sterling.

Sounds good to me.

I have seen a lot in these forums, but this is the first time an OP that seems reasonably worked out leaves me looking completely like a question mark.

I was thinking that would just be the tip of the iceberg of the issue, the rest would soon follow. No trucks, no aircraft, no nice avacado's from Peru, etc., everything going local in a matter of weeks. The thing is, they would not be prepared to take care of themselves like they did 200 years ago, hell, WE wouldn't be able to take care of ourselves if that happened now. I am just saying the more into the future you go becoming more and more dependent on high tech, the harder it would be for people to be plunged 400 years into the past.

Yes, I suppose that's true, but -

why should it happen?

How about that whole "electromagnetic pulse from a nuclear weapon detonated at altitude" thing?

Yeah well... there were always a number of ways for mankind to screw itself but the OP seems to presume that this apocalyptic scenario simply has to occur. I just don't understand why.

You see what's happening all around the world right now, revolutions in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Wisconson, it's a sign there is something seriously wrong, global warming or climate change, whatever you want to call it, just feels like the end coming up.

We're having a "revolution" in Wisconsin caused by global warming?

This is news!

You never struck me as the 'end of times' type of guy. Why now?
Surely the coming of democracy to North Africa should be a good thing, not something to get worried about? Or do you see it as loss of control of oil for the US? Did you even have control of that part of the world?

And I do not see the connection between global warming (which everyone except the Americans have known about for 30 years or more) and a move to democracy in North Africa.
Why didn't you mention AIDS? Thats as old as Global Warming and far worse for most people. I have lost most of my friends to AIDS, but as yet have not felt any effects that I can definitely attribute to Global warming.

And why do you predict a sudden catastrophic loss of all technology? (you mentioned 'a matter of weeks'😉.

Anyway, as the world stands today, the US would die out and India, China and Africa would rule! We know how to live without our cell phones and computers! We just prefer not to.
