The revelations from Mervyn King (report, February 14) prophesying that our standard of living in Britain may fall are both patronising and superficial. Where has Mr King been hiding during the last years of Labour incompetence?

The so-called years of growth that we have all "enjoyed" have been bought at some considerable cost. Our out-of-control national debt is a disgrace and is a direct result of more than 10 years of mismanagement. Taxation is at an all-time high and government profligacy is totally beyond control. Recovery will take decades of readjustment, for which we, the recipients of these blundering policies will all be made to pay.

There must be a better way to run a country, with all the expert human resources available. Labour isn't working.

Yet the majority is still better off than in the 80's. Go figure.

Youve got to hand it to Labout though, they reallyy know how to squander our money, line their own pockets and screw-up society big time. Trouble is they were elected because the other bunch were just as bad in different ways.

If you are referring to the early 80s then of course that is so since those years were the nadir of Britain's economic wellbeing following the disastrous attempts at government by the late unlamented H.Wilson and his henchman, Callaghan, when they had to go cap-in-hand to the IMF to stave off national bankcruptcy.
However the subsequent prosperity engendered by Margeret Thatcher has been completely dissipated by the incompetence of Blair/Brown administration during the last 10 years.
