From an article I read in a Dutch newspaper, but I found an English version of the list as well.
How interesting is this then?

Norway is the most peaceful nation on earth! Seemingly. I presume that's due to the alcohol prices though.

Cuba, Bosnia, Bangladesh and the Ukraine are all more peaceful than the US, which has an excellent 96th out 121 position.

The UK comes in at a grand 49th position, but according to most other resources this is no thanks to Scotland, which presumably is the most violent Western country to live in...

Iraq and Israel are in the bottom three.. .who'd have guessed.

Poland is 27th, but I think that's as long as you aren't gay.

It would be interesting to see how the US would rank if they removed the areas dominated by liberals... New York, LA etc...

Zimbabwe at 106? It thought they'd be closer to the bottom.
Also where's Somalia?

Norway Is the most peaceful nation on Earth, but they go to bed dreaming about their Viking ancestors. Ah Yes! those were the good old days. That's just my opinion Poo.

If you ask me, all this proves is that the Dutch have far too much spare time.

The Viking adventures must have served as some kind of cathartic release of pent-up hostility for the Norwegians.

I'm not one to normally engage in Cuba bashing, but how do they get a peaceful rating? They sent troops to Angola and Ethiopia during the 70s. Wouldn't that tarnish their record somewhat?

Sure it would. If Castro wasn't a commie despot.

How could Norway be more peaceful than Switzerland?

Beating up your own people doesn't count. It only counts if you beat up the people of other countries.

I don't know how the indices are computed, but maybe it has something to do with the fact that Norway actively tries to promote peace by offering to mediate talks between warring factions. Aside from being home to the city of Geneva, Switzerland doesn't really attempt anything similar as far as I know.

A large part of Cuba's population is of African origin -- including the region of Africa today known as Angola. The fact is that Angola was being attacked by South Africa both directly and through proxies because the world's most racist government couldn't tolerate having a country in its neighborhood being run by self-proclaimed Marxists. To stave off annihilation, the government of Angola accepted Cuba's offer of military aid. Cuba did not "invade" Angola.

On the other hand it is not really a secret that the US invaded South Vietnam (that's right -- the non-communist part of Vietnam) in the early Sixties to use it as a launching pad to attack North Vietnam. The government of South Vietnam that supposedly "invited" the US military into the country was illegitimate because it had no popular backing whatsoever. It was a puppet government made up of people the French and later the Americans knew would be reliable yes-men so long as they were paid well.
