The terrorists even bombed the King David hotel, killing over 80 people, mostly British consular workers.
And that act by the terrorists is what caused the British to give up the mandate in Palestine, a death sentence for the Palestinians.

Ask Iraq what happened to their nuclear reactor in Osirak in 1981, which they were building to make nuclear weapons. Ask Assad in Syria what happened to his plans for a nuclear reactor in 2007. Israel flew into their airspace and bombed them all, and the international community said nothing.

Here is a link of what transpired in the British mandate of Palestine from 1917-1948. It appears that there were hostilities on both sides, and as usual the Jews were a bit more skilled at it. The Palestinians were far from just a poor helpless unarmed bunch.
Like I said and proved, from 1948 there was a peace option. and a 2-state solution, but the Palestinians chose war [with the help of their Arab buddies], while the Jews set up a bonafide nation-state.
Its all about attitude. One is peaceful, progressive and industrious, while the other is warlike, backward and lazy
