It was lost on xanthos that Rose was complaining about being fearful of any sort of open dialogue because the administration would kow-tow to a student or parent that didn't like it.

I'll bet you hated them, Xanthos.. I'll also bet that if you had a teacher that said something you didn't like you'd be the first to run to the administration and complain about their having an opinion that you considered improper.
We're talking arts subjects here aren't we? Then everything is opinion.

Arts subjects.........Where on earth did you get that idea?

Ok let's rephrase what I said earlier.

Telling me exactly what is in the textbook is pointless. I could just read the textbook and learn exactly the same thing. What a good teacher should do is make me want to learn the material. They should also explain why things are the way they are and what this actually means.

In physics don't tell me a motion equation and then give me 50 examples to use it on. Instead show how the equation is derived or found experimentally. Give a few interesting examples and once the class demonstrates that they can do them stop giving them pointless busy work.

But of course that would be teaching their opinion and we can't have that can we? 🙄

teach the facts without opinion.
There's no such thing! Every "fact" is someone's opinion - some people believe the American civil war was about slavery, some believe faster-than-light travel is impossible, some believe fish oil makes you live longer, some believe Roman civilisation was more sophisticated than Saxon civilisation ....
Every damn fact is just an opinion. You could pick a topic and find it is taught quite differently around the world by teachers who are all sticking to the facts as their society sees it.

Don't argue with xanthos......all she does is take a statement like yours, then come up with some smarmy contrarian put-down that has NOTHING to do with what you said, as she is doing now. She knew what you meant very well, but now she's talking oranges to your apples. Xanthos is just an unhappy person that has to argue about everything because she has no friends and can't understand that it's her mean natured, unpleasant personality that prevents other people from wanting her around. I feel sorry for her.

Teaching is about preparing students for life.
It's not about filling your students with knowledge - although we try to do that. It's not about marking tests and papers - although we do that too.
It's about building their confidence in meeting the world beyond the school - being able to ask questions, to constructively criticise, to develop an argument, to understand a little bit about the world around them, and to be able to help in the preparation of the next generation beyond them.

And I think it's also about something that really can't be defined, a role model kind of thing. I can remember a few teachers, not necessarily even teachers that I ever had any classes from, that I really think had a positive effect on my life just because of the way they were in school and around town. Just their professional bearing and open attitude had a positive effect even if I rarely even had any reason to speak with them. Just looking at them and you knew they were people you could trust if you ever needed help. I'm not being very clear but perhaps you understand what I mean.

LOL! I'm sure the day will come when you'll also be one of those bastards, or perhaps are already and just don't realize it yet.

I'd like to think so, but there's always someone better isn't there ...
