This one will become a refrain in the "are you better off" debate. From Clinton's speech:

“Are we better off than we were when he took office, with an economy in free fall, losing 750,000 jobs a month? The answer is yes.”

John Kerry may have tonight's, depending on what Obama has to say.

John Kerry: “Ask Osama bin Laden if he’s better off than he was four years ago.”

Did Romney really forget to thank the troops in Afghanistan last week??

I agree with your comments. Good insights.

As for the President's speech, there were many notable moments.

Republicans as out-of-touch ideologues who prescribe tax cuts as the medicine to cure all that ills America. 'Feel a cold coming on?' he said, asking as the GOP. 'Take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations and call us in the morning."

May the best speech giver win!!!

Come on kids, just another 4 more years, it's all Obama asks. Then at the end of that 4 years, if you don't like what you see, feel free not to vote for him again. 😡

We're perhaps better off than we were at the height of the recession, but nobody can seriously argue that we're better off than what most people believed we'd be at this point. Weak economies don't typically last this long.

It's like the stimulus package. At the end of the day no recognizable benefit was seen even though Obama promised that the unemployment rate would drop below 8% and that millions of jobs would be created.

The argument will always be, "Sure its bad, but it would have been much worse if it were not for my policies". Obama's mistake was giving parameters, but even then people are blind to the fact that he has no idea what the hell he's doing.

Just reading Steve Forbe's book "Freedom Manifest", and he makes the parallel between Reagan taking over from Carter, and Obama taking over from Bush43. In both cases the economy was in shambles, and in both cases it got worse for a bit. But by three and a half years, there is a stark difference between the Reagan results and that of Obama. And Reagan never had both houses of Congress, and never bellyached about a lack of cooperation across the isle.

No, but we didn't have the trade agreements before. The problem is structural, and 40 years old in terms of the decline of the wage of the American worker. Obama's mistake was to treat the problem as cyclical rather than structural. But given that Presidential terms are only 4 years, I don't know what we can do about it.

Well, it did stop the freefall of the loss of 750 thousand jobs a month left by your crowd.

We could amend the Constitution so Obama can serve a third term as President.

Like I said, without Obama it would have always been worse.

It's like me wearing my lucky game day shirt. If I wear it and my team loses, I can just say, "The score would not have been as close even though we lost had I not worn my shirt". 😡

The point is, we are much better off than we were the moment Bush left office when we hemorrhaging. And given the poll movement after the latest jobs report, it seems that there are plenty of voters who don't want to hand the country back to the same policies which led to the loss of 750 thousand jobs per month.

" there are plenty of voters who don't want to hand the country back to the same policies which led to the loss of 750 thousand jobs per month."

Then they really have to ask what happened in October 2008? Was the whole episode the result of Bush tax cuts? Bush war policy? Anything Bush did? Reckless Endangerment, traces the causes of the 08 meltdown as far back as the Carter administration, which would mean the blame has to be shared by Reagan, Bush41, and Clinton who put the Carter programs on steroids.

It also must be shared by a host of Federal regulatory agencies that either didn't do their jobs or overpowered by other federal bureaucracies, and by powerful Congressmen and Senators, in the later years primarily Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, who right up until the last minute insisted that Fannie and Freddie were sound and secure.

The meltdown of mortgage, banking and insurance industries, is very comparable to the meltdown of NASDAQ and the subsequent Clinton recession in 2000. In fact, that may have been more traceable to a particular administration policy than the 08 meltdown.

The Democrat equivalent is, "Raise taxes, especially in the rich, regulate favoring our constituents like labor, give away stimulus money to cronies, and blame uncooperative Republicans for the failure of these policies.
