As winning for your nation implies that your nation is the best at a particular athlectic activity it also implies, albeit sublimely that your nation produces ethnically superior athletes.
As a tail end the winner receives a gold (tinged with colonialism) medal (associated with war)

I think the athletes that compete there just want to compete in a *best vs best* competition. I see it more as individual competition among the athletes now.

And on the subject of non-utilitarian posts, let us consider this:

I agree with wib's comments... the Olympics, for the most part, is much more an individual competition than a 'team' or a 'national' competition... when someone goes to the Olympics, their purpose is to win a gold medal for themselves, not for their country...at least that's true of athletes who are perceived as having a chance to win... for some countries, just being there for the experience is enough for the athletes (and ideally, that should be what the Olyjmpics are about, but those days are gone forever). But for countries like the U.S., the object is to win a gold medal and, if the sport is 'important' enough, you could be set for life financially through endorsements, speaking fees and book deals (not to mention being an 'analyst' at future olympics).
I don't really agree that winning a gold medal implies that one's nation is the best at a particular athletic activity, I think it just means that the person who wins the medal is the best at that activity (at least on the day of the competition). To use a recent event as an example, the fact that Lance Armstrong won yet another Tour de France does not, to me, in any way say that Americans are better cyclists than Europeans, but merely that Lance Armstrong himself is a better cyclist than anyone in Europe right now, and he has been for several years.
I don't know that any country since Hitler's time has in any way claimed to produce ethnically superior athletes (ok, maybe the Soviet Union did claim that, but they're gone now)... but certainly no one claims that today...no, not even the U.S.
Not even considering the rampant corruption in the IOC, I kind of think that the Olympics have outlived their usefullness at this point. And they keep trying to add sports that already decide their champions on their own... i guess it was back in 88 or 92, they added tennis, which gave Stefi Graf a gold medal...big deal... I loved watching Graf play during her career, but what was the point of having that in the Olympics? Now they want to add golf...it's ridiculous...
As a kid, the most enjoyable part of the Olympics was seeing our college basketball players regularly demolish pro teams from the rest of the world... and of course, our 'Dream Team' of 1992, despite the presence of Christian Laettner, was indeed the greatest team ever assembled (partly because they also played like a team)... of course, now our players are getting demolished due to (1) Shaq's absence and (2) other countries have taken our 1960-80s style of play (i.e. teamwork) and are using it against us...
If they never held another Olympics, I honestly wouldn't miss it a bit... In fact, last year, after we were hit by Hurricane Charley in August, we actually missed most of the Olympics anyway, because we didn't have electricity for about 12 days... so congratulations to whoever won the gold medal in basketball !

I you detach from the Olympics and look at with pure objectivity its a barrier to the emancipation of racism and capitalism.
