I think by "academic" it mean that he works in a university, or in some form of education. At least thats what it means over here.
What proof do you wnat? His published works?

The most alarming thing about this article is that this guy is being allowed to practice psychiatry in the Chicago area. To paraphrase the bible: psychiatrist heal thyself.
