Biden implores key Republicans: 'Follow your conscience' on Ginsburg replacement
This is quite possibly stupider than anything Trump has ever said. Forget the cancer-causing windmills, forget thinking Frederick Douglas was still alive or injecting yourself with bleach...asking Republicans to "follow" their "conscience" is the single most brain-dead thing ever said by a presidential candidate.
@vivify saidYou're being ridiculous.

It seems like good politics to me; there are still Republicans out there who don't like Trump and appealing to them on this issue costs Biden nothing.
Trump is a voice of division and partisanship; Biden is making a wise strategic choice to appeal to Republicans.
EDIT: The Morning Consult Poll said 20% of Republicans said the winner of the election should pick the successor to RBG and 9% more were undecided. https://morningconsult.com/2020/09/21/supreme-court-polling-ginsburg-trump-biden-2020/

@vivify saidno it's not. Several of them are vulnerable in their reelection. Drumming up their hypocrisy and reminding their voters of it might be the last thing they can do

@vivify saidHas it crossed your mind that the appeal is essentially rhetorical and that he's actually talking to the electorate?

@zahlanzi saidEarlier in the year, every single Republican voted to exonerate Trump in the impeachment. Every single Republican voted that Trump did not obstruct justice when he blocked Congressional subpoenas from being issue in his own investigation, and turned the away when Trump instructed others to defy those subpoenas.
no it's not. Several of them are vulnerable in their reelection. Drumming up their hypocrisy and reminding their voters of it might be the last thing they can do
Every single one. Not one Republican was afraid that voting to exonerate someone who clearly and deliberately obstructed justice in his own investigation would hurt their reelection chances; quite the opposite, They did not vote with their "conscience" did they? So what makes you think they would now?
Every single solitary Republican also voted to exonerate Trump of abuse of power...except one. You know who? Mitt Romney, who already stated he was *wasn't* running for reelection. And even he still voted that Trump was innocent of obstruction of justice. So every Republican up for reelection voted along party lines.
The same with House Republicans; every single solitary Republican in the House voted against impeachment.
So when you say "no it's not", your statement has no basis in reality. Just look at how EVERY Republican has voted just this year. You think those same Republicans will vote with their alleged "conscience" NOW?

@deepthought saidYes. This is actually what infuriates me. The Republican electorate enjoys sticking it to Dems. The act of Biden pathetically asking to not continue with an act that will better the playing field for Republicans will only embolden Republicans to do exactly that.
Has it crossed your mind that the appeal is essentially rhetorical and that he's actually talking to the electorate?
It's like a kid nicely asking to have his lunch money given back. Except that kid is the Democratic party and the bullies are laughing at the kid's sorry appeal to their "conscience". This was a weak display from Biden, given who he's appealing to.
Look at the conservatives on this site. You may be tempted to write them off as extremist, but that's not really the case. They are accurate representations of the herd mentality of Republicans. You think any one of them will consider Biden's words and say "you know what, I haven't looked at that way before"? Of course not.

not the same thing
americans pretty much didn't give a fuk either way. This time they might and this time it's really close to the election
"So when you say "no it's not", your statement has no basis in reality."
That's your opinion, one you have let your feelings influence. We don't like republicans but lets be objective here. Some might care about setting a dangerous precedent. Some might be afraid of looking as a clear hypocrite. Whatever the reason, Biden did the correct thing in pushing this idea and hinting there would be individual consequences for republicans who vote for this nomination. A long shot chance is better than no chance.
"You think those same Republicans will vote with their alleged "conscience" NOW?"
Now you're being simply naive. Of course not. Biden didn't really appeal to conscience either. It was simply a polite way of saying it. That's your issue with this? Maybe he should have used the same tactics some democrats are using to try and get people to vote, that is calling them names and trying to coerce them to fall in line. I wonder how that is going for them. In politics you use the carrot before using the stick. Contain your enthusiasm and reserve your outrage for when democrats will refuse to use the stick. I hear Diane Feinstein is thinking of surrendering.

@zahlanzi saidIt absolutely is. The impeachment showed Republicans will continue to support corruption, especially if it's politically convenient. We're in the same situation now with Ginsburg's seat.

They didn't care about Trump forcing a country to attack his political opponent by withholding critical military funds and obstructing investigation into that act....but they care now about the SCOTUS vacancy? That doesn't make sense. They're both historic events whose results could shape the future.

You're right in that Biden should say something. Maybe I'm just ticked off at the futility of his actions, even though they're right actions he should be taking. I guess I just don't like how weak it makes Biden look, at least in my view. Republicans filling the SCOTUS seat is inevitable, and the statement just came across as pathetic.
But again, you're right. Biden has to say something.
@mott-the-hoople saidYou win. Dems are definitely losing here. Your party has the power and Dems are just begging for table scraps. This reaction is exactly what I knew would happen after Biden made his statement, which is why it pissed me off.
love me some squirming 🤓
You've got this one. Republicans, at least for now, are winning.

@vivify saidBut he’s not talking to republicans is he. He’s hoping it galvanises his base and gather some swing voters when the inevitable happens and the republicants laugh at him for his plea to reason and fair play.

If the Dems say nothing the republicans are off the hook.
