I think they are either spies or the word's dumbest hikers.
What do you all think? Which is it?
Ambitious freelance journalist-type chancers. If they play their cards right, they'll get paid gigs telling their story on campuses and other venues for several years to come. Plus the book about the whole affair. Then perhaps a book about traipsing around America talking to people about the whole affair. Their income could increase markedly if the U.S. starts a drumbeat for war with Iran one day.

Originally posted by KunsooIran's nuclear scientists have been dying from unnatural causes lately. I would expect increased monitoring of the borders because of that. If they were spies they might have simply underestimated how strict the borders became. Maybe they were assassins sent to kill more nuclear scientists. Who knows.
I would say pretty dumb spies if so.
Maybe they are just stupid hikers with too much money to spend. That does make it hard to understand why they didn't buy a GPS or a good map though. Perhaps they had more money than brains. I suppose anything is possible.
Originally posted by FMFSo, essentially, either they're really really dumb or really really smart.

I think they are lucky to be released at all. Iran has nuclear scientists that are being assassinated left and right. You can't make money if you die in jail. Interesting theory though.
Originally posted by Metal BrainYou really think there's a chance that these guys were sent by the US government to kill Iranian scientists and so the US government drops them off in Iraq and tells them to walk? You don't think the US government is capable of generating some fake papers and buying them a plane ticket to Tehran?

Originally posted by sh76I don't know and neither do you. Maybe they were going to be picked up by other spies already in Iran. How are we to know?

The most popular theory is that it is Israel that is sending assassins, but how do we know who is doing it?
How do you think assassins would be sneaked in? How would you do it if that was your job?
I suppose they could be really stupid hikers. Maybe they are much dumber than they look. You want to play soccer in the Korean DMZ? On second thought...
Originally posted by Metal BrainSheesh, how hard do you think it is to get into Iran? I can probably get there within a couple of months on a tourist visum. If Israel is sending assasins in there they probably won't have Israeli passports.

Would it be easy for an American to get a Dutch passport?
Originally posted by Metal BrainIt would be easy to get a fake one. Not that hard to get a legitimate one, though, for an American. I think you just have to work and live in Holland for 5 years.
