Exactly, direct charity is often quite problematic, but through on site infrasrtructure development, one can be sure the work isn't going to waste.

As for doing it now, I do, and have done and will do more. Do what you can when you can, right? Can't find a full time teaching job at home? Hmmmmmmm!
You must be the blind leading the blind.
Must be nice traveling all around the world making believe you're teaching, and getting paid for it!
What do you do between assignments?

I agree it's about the rest of the world pulling together.
Unfortunately the mechanism that exists is corrupt, inefficient and fails to understand the economics involved.
It's so hard to see any sort of mechanism that will work. Giving funds to these corrupt leaderships is just asking for trouble.
What I do know for sure is if we ignore the problem we will have to deal with billions, not millions of immigrants on our borders.

"we should use our militaries"
Go back to the post if you want, it's the very first one I put up in this thread, the second post in the thread, free of edits you'll notice.
Also, given the fact it'd be charity if I get it, I would be getting a subsistence wage. You did ask if I'd be rolling up my sleeves.
Now I think you should just calm down a bit because this is getting a little ridiculous.

You work for subsistence wages because that's all you're worth, plus you get free vacations around the world. No wife and kids i would assume?

You, sir, are a red faced leech posing as a do- gooder. Stop being rediculous!

My point is that it would be good if it didn't have to be one or the other, but both. You tell me to roll up my sleeves, I demonstrate that I'm already doing so, doesn't suit you so you start trying to quantify my worth?!
Please, write whatever else you want, but please just answer the question...
Would it be a bad thing if the military (speaking in general terms), as part of their general duties, also helped out with infrastructural improvements in impoverished nations alongside civilian aid workers?
yes or no would be much easier than all this huffing and puffing and we can get back to ordered debate rather than flailing our arms and not saying much.

You do know that they already do, right?

But if you read back over some of the posts, smw has been giving me hassle for thinking it's a good thing. Apparently that means I'm a worthless wannabe do-gooder who doesn't roll up his sleeves. I'm just trying to cut the bickering bit and see if we at least share one common point on whether it is a good thing or not, regardless of other factors.
So yes, I know it's already done, I just would like to see if smw agrees that it's not a bad thing.
Edit: in and of itself.

I don't want our military to be anywhere, in any foreign country doing any thing for anyone, until we take care of ourselves FIRST. Get Pres. Carter to build bridges.Do You Get It? Just my personal opinion. In other words....Jimmy crack corn and i don't care! I hate the rest of the world. Not because i'm better than they are, but because They Hate Us! Unless we're handing out freebees. Can we at least rebuild New Oleans first? Then you can stick your greedy hands out. You buck toothed Jackass! (avatar)

Glad that's been cleared up.
