Removal begins of ‘Black Lives Matter’ street mural near White House
Crews in Washington, D.C., have started painting over the city's "Black Lives Matter" mural, a prominent symbol of the 2020 protests following George Floyd's killing. This move comes after a Republican-backed bill threatened to withhold federal funding unless the mural was removed.
The large, yellow "Black Lives Matter" lettering was painted across two blocks of 16th Street in June 2020, just a short distance from the White House. At the time, the city embraced the mural as a tribute to the protests. In 2021, Mayor Muriel Bowser declared the mural permanent as a memorial to the movement. However, Representative Andrew Clyde, R-Georgia, introduced legislation requiring the mural’s removal and the renaming of the area to Liberty Plaza, warning that the city could face a loss of federal funds if the demand wasn’t met.
The removal of the mural comes shortly after Black History Month, a period dedicated to recognizing the people and events that have shaped the African diaspora. From moments of profound loss and injustice to extraordinary triumphs and leadership, these stories are an integral part of history.
