It has been suggested that Tony Blair's next job could be as a peace envoy to the middle east; a representative of the quartet - US, EU, Russia and the UN.

Taking into account his role in the northern Ireland peace process, and also his role in Gulf War II, would he be a good candidate?

The idea is gathering pace, with the quartet apparently going to meet to discuss the possibility:

Does America's backing of Tony Blair for this job show they have no clue, or do not care, what people in the Middle-East think of him? A man who likes to invade Middle-eastern countries on dodgey intelligence, a man who stands by and watched as Israel invaded Lebanon - an invasion that Israel's own report damned:

You are right to condemn Blair and he is guilty as charged.

But for all that he is a hugely talented politician and he has the trust of Bush and the American people.

He is clearly not an unbiased figure and should not be seen as such. However he is very used to making deals and as Israel and the US have the power, it is more vital that the person has the support of these people.

Should he convert to Catholicism as has been bruited about, would that add clout to his portfolio?

I don't think that would gain him respect - a pro-abortionist, pro-gay rights Catholic? He's just confused surely.

Personally I think not.

In Ireland for example (where he did do a good job), but sides respected him, so where able to come to a agreement

While the US, UN, Russia etc may think he is fine, Arabs (after Bush) hate him a lot.

He is very unlikey to be respected by them in any discussion or talks, so sending him would in effect be not that usualful.

Hamas have made the view of him very clear and any discussion on the West bank / Gaza would have to include Hamas

As far as they are concerned he was one of the Iraq war mongers, refused to condem Israil when they where destroying Lebennon.

Can't see how he will get to any agreement

Or, more likely, just another unprincipled opportunist in politics.
