The Russians were way ahead of the game already in 2016, successfully manipulating public opinion in America through sophisticated bombardment of social media and fake news outlets, sowing divisiveness and confusion. Trump took it hook, line, and sinker, and has been the Russians' unwitting dupe ever since. Trump still buys into the debunked conspiracy theory that Ukraine, and not Russia, was behind election meddling in the 2016 campaign; this partially explains why he still thinks Hilary's email servers are somewhere in Ukraine, although intelligence experts have explained to him a) that physical location of servers is irrelevant, and b) that Russian agents and not Ukrainians were responsible for election meddling in 2016.

Trump is out of his depth; he and his buddies (Sondland, for example) are making crude, amateurish blunders. See for example:
