Trump took it hook, line, and sinker, and has been the Russians' unwitting dupe ever since. Trump still buys into the debunked conspiracy theory that Ukraine, and not Russia, was behind election meddling in the 2016 campaign; this partially explains why he still thinks Hilary's email servers are somewhere in Ukraine, although intelligence experts have explained to him a) that physical location of servers is irrelevant, and b) that Russian agents and not Ukrainians were responsible for election meddling in 2016.
Trump opposed such providing lethal weaponry to the Ukrainians and had the Republican party platform in 2016 adjusted to delete support for such aid:
