However, “So Europe will slouch towards World War Three” does not necessarily follow. WW3 (an utterly chilling event) will only be initiated by a NATO country’s sovereignty being threatened, and NATO failing to respond adequately. Trump is correct in questioning US’s vast commitment to NATO (about 3.5 % ...[text shortened]... ership after Biden, and, yes, he might appease Putin, but at least he will avoid taking us into WW3.
I would say that "he might appease Putin" raises the likelihood of "NATO failing to respond adequately". Of course it's a probabilistic model, but P(WW3|Trump)>P(WW3|not Trump). Yuk.
