America, where everyone has equal rights. Only some are more equal than others
For a long time whites were more equal than anyone else in America. Even after Emancipation, Blacks were only considered to be 3/5 human. And as you might know, even the Irish were not considered to be white during a stretch of our history. "Irish need not apply."
I won't ask about your personal life, but I can tell you that my growing up in America during the times that I did had me living like a spy within my own family until I could afford to move out and live independently.
Other minorities at least have the comfort and support of growing up with others of the same minority.
Even though I was cool with being a guy who liked guys, I noticed that nobody else around me would have been cool with that (I was in high-school and college from mid to late 1970s, for a timeline reference).
And even now, gay people and other non-heterosexual/non-hetero-romantic people can find themselves to be easy targets that other oppressed groups can agree to punch down upon in order to get in good with the whites and the political so-called "Christians".
Hoping that's enough for starters.
P.S. -- Yes, gays are indeed special. We often excel in the arts, linguistic skills, and information technology. 😉

But for now, let me just say that just because a group has the right to have demonstrations and parades,
does not mean I have to like it.
When WWII ended, there were huge parades everywhere - and *everyone* rejoiced for our heroes.
There's a difference. The LGB folk are just too self-absorbed for my liking.

P.S. -- On the public relations front, I think we might agree that some of "the gays" and the Alphabet People have sometimes made missteps that did not help "the cause" -- so, maybe as a reversal of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" some people could benefit from advice from straight allies.
