BERLIN — The Trump administration is launching a global campaign to end the criminalization of homosexuality in dozens of nations where it's still illegal to be gay, U.S. officials tell NBC News, a bid aimed in part at denouncing Iran over its human rights record.
U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, the highest-profile openly gay person in the Trump administration, is leading the effort, which kicks off Tuesday evening in Berlin. The U.S. embassy is flying in LGBT activists from across Europe for a strategy dinner to plan to push for decriminalization in places that still outlaw homosexuality — mostly concentrated in the Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean.
“It is concerning that, in the 21st century, some 70 countries continue to have laws that criminalize LGBTI status or conduct,” said a U.S. official involved in organizing the event.

@philokalia saidI think we should start the decriminalization process here at home first.

@sonhouse saidNot to mention the imperialistic touch; but your point is clearer. Watch for the international distraction (can't rule out an attack on Canada, those nasties) to rally the troops.
@Suzianne
Yes, that would be more to the point. Making headlines overseas is just distraction from the corruption rife within the Trump WH.
@philokalia saidHe is lying, you sweet naive summer child.

A transgender woman who failed to get asylum in the U.S. died after being attacked in El Salvador.
An organization that supports transgender people in El Salvador said that a woman who goes by Camila was reported missing at the end of January. They contacted hospitals in the area and found that she was admitted on January 31 and passed away on February 3 due to her injuries.
Last year, Camila came to the U.S. in a migrant caravan after being threatened in El Salvador.
Activists in El Salvador said that she was deported by the U.S. several months ago.
“She migrated to the U.S. because of threats that she had received, but she was deported because they didn’t believe her,” Aislinn Odaly’s, an LGBTQ activist, told the Washington Blade.

He's lying to...
Anger half his base and gain next to zero attraction among the left?
@philokalia saidWhile the US government has held the position for a while that such laws should be ended and though this seems just another facet of the anti-Iran campaign, I fully support such an initiative.

I wonder if it will remain in effect, however, once the inevitable backlash from social conservatives is heard by Trump. He has backtracked on many policies (like the Syria withdrawal) when faced with opposition from his political allies.
Of course, there is much irony here considering that when the SCOTUS struck down our criminal laws against homosexual conduct only 15 years ago, Scalia, the darling of the right wing and supposed template for SCOTUS appointments now, wrote a furious and hysterical dissent fuming about the Court adopting the "homosexual agenda". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_v._Texas
@zahlanzi saidSee, this is the fun thing about Pres. Trump...
You're operating under the impression that he is smart and thinks things through.
He's simultaneously an idiot yet unbeatable.
Let's say he is an idiot and all that he accomplishes is largely due to the genius of people around him... How does he manage to keep their loyalty? How did he convince them to stand by him, and to never turn on him or cheat him? How did he pick them so well?
... And what about how he tweets on his own, according to even his detractors, and this is one of his more popular points...? What about the off the cuff stuff in his speeches, and the live debates he did against Hillary, where many believe he came out on top..?
I think you should really sit down and try to account for this...
... Or just begrudgingly admit that he is competent.
I don't know.
