As far as I know (and yes, I could probably google it, but can’t be arsed) is that the Japanese referred to the women as “comfort women”, but what we’re actually talking about is enforced sex-slavery.
There was a lot of commotion in Japan sometime in the 90’s when they decided to mention them and what it actually was in the schoolbooks.
Before that, Japan right-out refused to teach the subject.

Although it does remind me a little of Austria’s attitude to WW2. They seem to think they were on the good side in that scuffle and deny doing anything anti-Jewish.
