Any of you ever put on a rubber unless you planned to use it?
Didn't think so.

Any thoughts on the reason for this practice draft?

I think 'rubber application' is taught in the 5th grade of Public Schools here in the U.S., right after the anal-sex "educational" film. ALL of our 11yr olds need to know about that stuff just in case they were thinking about it .. and if they weren't, they should have been (parents fault)

Ya gotta have your priorties straight.

National Defense and the need to be prepared isn't taught in our school system at all .. none of our teachers believe in it.

It's from a couple of weeks ago. I can't find anything online about it either. Basically, the U.S. Government is testing the sytem that would be used if a draft happened. I am guessing the computer system for selecting names and probably a test run on the paperwork

Grow up. We teach what the state standards are. Teachers are also hampered by being required to ensure that all children pass tests that are specifically written so that half of the test-takers fail. If you want your children to learn about national defense, teach them. Don't avoid passing along information and then whining because it wasn't passed along.

I think all the special people won't have to worry about going to war. Those are the ones that go to Canada, get a "cushy" assignment, or are otherwise spared the horrors.

The "State standards" are what I posted for Calif.

"Teachers are also hampered by being required to ensure that all children pass tests that are specifically written so that half of the test-takers fail."

Actually .. nobody fails, it would be cruel for children to think they might at some point in there life be held accountable for themselves.

We have what is known as "social promotion" .. you can't hold kids back .. to traumatic. We give 'em the answers and if they can't write, we do it for them .. everyone passes.

Sad but true. Maybe Hillary will get elected and then she can do something about our education system. I think it is too late for some, though.

Every 18 year-old in the US is required by law to go to the Post Office and register for the draft. It is simply filling out a little post card, and sending it in. Where do you think those go? The Selective Service Dept has existed for many, many years, and have been prepared to impliment the draft at a moments notice.

I believe registering for the draft started again in 1980. The registration part was only gone for about 5 years.

the US doesn't have enough troops in rotation to maintain long multi-year occupations (ie IRAQ, afganistan etc)

More troops are needed to maintain this foreign policy objective. Currently, not enough young Americans are signing up for military service to sustain the troop levels on active duty. 24-30 months is about the max the US can sustain.

A country like IRAQ which requires a 5-10 year occupation will require approx 50,000- 100,000 more troops in rotation each year.

This is the reason for the DRAFT practice. Should the Republicans win in '08 a Draft will likely be instituted to extend foreign occupations in IRAN and possibly North Korea. A Democrat victory in '08 will likely see a decrease in occupation and no Draft.
