U.S. draft "practice run"

I'm for a draft into service to your Country.

It doesn't have to be military .. as a matter of fact NO ONE should be drafted into the military IMO. If America is truely threatened or attacked I would hope (and I believe) that young American men/women would rush to her defense without being "drafted" into service.

IMO EVERYONE can and should serve for a minimum of 2 yrs. sometime between the ages of 18-25.

Lots of ways to serve without picking up a gun.

Whatever you can do, we should be able to find a use for it. If nothing more than phyisical labor .. we've got a job for you.

This would serve several purposes ..
1. a job for 18-25 yr olds.
2. 18-25 yr olds becoming fully vested in being "American"
3. 18-25 yr olds are off the streets and learning disipline and the value of a $
4. a workforce to clean up our Cities, highways, Nat'l Parks, etc.
5. support troops for those that do the actual fighting.

The main value I see in this is that by serving your Country you "pay your dues" and by so doing become 100% American.
The analogy would be the often used .. if you didn't vote, you can't complain about the guy in office .. well, if you haven't served anyone but yourself .. IMHO you're not a true American.

Oh really? That's why I was drafted in 1970? The draft has been around since the first World War. They dicontinued drafting soldiers in the mid 70's opting for a volunteer Army. You still had to register for the draft but no one has been drafted in 30 years. Most military members don't want the draft and I have to agree with them.

Oh dear, you are beginning to sound like a socialist. I though the whole point of American government was to defend self-serving capitalism against the horrors of socialism and communism.

Tough to pay for a program that size.

The U.S. military is the best in the world precisely because it's a volunteer force, not a jobs program.

That's a bit simplistic, but you're basically right. One of the roles of the U.S. goverment is to protect the free market economy and not let it become over-burdened with the weight of failed socialist economic policies.

Nothing to do with the fact that its military spending is comparable to much of the rest of the world put together then. 😛

That sounds an aweful lot like a socialist government job creation scheme.

In 1973, the draft ended and the U.S. converted to an All-Volunteer military.

The registration requirement was suspended in April 1975. It was resumed again in 1980 by President Carter in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Registration continues today as a hedge against underestimating the number of servicemen needed in a future crisis.

So, what Merk said was accurate.

We have so much waste is Government spending that could be saved by cutting the fat .. but that's another thread I guess.

IMO the money saved in the longrun would make the program successful .. the crimes not commited, the disipline learned, the concept of service instilled, the growth potential for the character of Americas youth .. not to mention .. the work done.

Brothers had to register in 76 and 78 when they turned 18. They filled out the same cards I filled out in 69.

Ummm... I can't argue with that, (I didn't have to fill mine out until the mid-90's, so I wasn't around at the time.) but I wonder if the cards weren't for some other "supposed" purpose. Like some reworded way of getting the same information and accomplishing the same thing.

Hillary and Bill were already elected to high office, and have had plenty of chances.
