It will "play out" like this: Putin will continue to live in the past, hoping somehow, he can recreate the invasions of Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968, refusing to accept the cold war ended 20 years ago, and with a military machine that's little more than an empty shell of the red army of yesteryear. While the war in Ukraine drags on, arms, equipment and supplies will pour across the Polish border from the west, wearing down the Russian army who are facing shortages of everything in addition to defections. The mercenaries from Syria will fight as long as they are paid and supplied well, but they have no intention of giving their lives for Mother Russia. Putin will continue to rattle his nuclear saber, but with multiple buffers between Putin and the guy who pushes the launch button, it's highly unlikely everyone in the chain of command will blindly obey Putin if they think it means WW3. In the end, I predict Putin will be replaced (voluntarily or not)
As an aside to all this, we can count on many in the GOP including Donald Trump, Steven Segal and other assorted zombies to act as Putin's "useful idiots" until he is replaced.

The Russians aren’t anymore suicidal than us and short of nato invading a Russian federation state there will not be an all out war and then it’s just a waiting game until the Russians themselves get sick of rule by an authoritarian oligarchy.
