My union is merging with the United Steel Workers.

This is, I think, the 1st time a British trade union (certainly one of this size) has merged with a union operating in different countries.

"National unions have dealt with national companies. To deal with international companies you need international unions."

Is this the case? Do people think this is progress?

Yes. All these little, fragmented trade unions simply don't have the power they need to contend with multi-national corporations.

We need One Big Union.

Where have I heard that before?

I don't think one big union is necessarily a good thing.

Do you have any info on the USW?

One Big Union, not one big union.

I think it is a good idea. After all you as the local bargain for your compensation, and rights. Merging the unions has the benefit of greater resources, better communication, and the ability to confront corporations moving jobs overseas as a result of union action. When there is nowhere left to run, they will have to deal with us!

Trade unions are mainly concerned to protect the idle and incompetent; most efficient workers hold them in contempt.

"Workers of the world unite!" Pardon me while I ROFL. Socialism doesn't work, why do you think no steel is produced in the United States any more?

It's like you type puke. How do you do it?

Trade Unions are there to influence the man, in favour of the people who actually produce things!

Well of course since you are most likely to belong to the category I specified you would naturally be a union man.

really? because there are a lot of union brothers where I work that would take exception to that. Unions exist, because capitalists cannot be counted on to treat workers fairly. Their very existance came about as a result of abuse of the working class. Read a history book.

And this from someone who long since stopped working for a living, relying instead on the state.

Apologies - didn't pick up the capitalisation (if you pardon the pun).

I am not living on the 'State', as commies like you would wish. Instead it benefits from my paying about £12,000 net in taxes every year with little to show for it. So just pipe down and be grateful.

All unions do, shavixmir, is protect the lazy and the incompetent, as well as drive up the cost of goods and services. Moreover, unions act like a kind of tax on the rest of us, however, there is never any sort of return benefit in the form of government spending on social services, roads, civic buildings, etc.

You, Redmike and shavixmir are so 19th century. I've thought of a new slogan for your little he-man, capitalist-haters club: Union members of the world disband, you've nothing to lose except your idleness and incompetence!
