While Russia and it's oligarchs have been hit with harsh sanctions, the US and EU still haven't banned imports of Russian oil and gas, which makes up a very significant bulk of Russia's income.
What striking here is the reason: that sanctioning oil could hurt the EU/US domestically; a rise in gas prices, and the fact the many Europeans depend on Russian oil to heat their homes.
While this makes sense (that they want to punish Russia while not hurting their own citizens) I can't help but feel there's immense hypocrisy here. Furthermore, sanctions will hurt average Russian citizens far more than the rich men running the government. Putin will not feel the strain of these sanctions.
Yes, I get it; sanctions will indirectly force those in government to act, lest the ire of the people cause some severe backlash. But the article makes the point that many people in the EU need Russian oil and gas to heat their homes, cook, etc. I had that same image in for the Russian citizens, facing hardships incurred because of one man.
Again, I understand this is not a world where things are black and white. Hard decisions like cripple the economy of an entire nation in order to stop one man controlling evil actions of that country, is one such grey area. It's still quite a somber fact.
@vivify saidYeah, tough decisions.......

We are still dependent on fossil fuel.
@vivify saidI don’t like the idea but these sanctions are of no use if they are short term, we may need to stick with them for decades and cutting ourselves off fro Russia’s oil and gas completely in the short term might be described as “cutting your nose off to spite your face” and make them less sustainable in the long term.

It’s more important that Putin finds it harder or impossible to spend these funds on high grade military kit or squirrel them away via his bag man oligarchs, controlling what he can import is just as important as controlling what he exports. End of the day ordinary Russians need to eat like everyone else.
@vivify saidImagine the power when nordstream 2 is online. Yet you libs cant see biden giving it the go ahead while shutting our gas/oil down.

Europe is even more dependent on
Russian energy....A complete embargo
could, very well, plunge 'The West,' into an
economic depression. You would be the first
to complain the high pump prices, and blame
it on President Biden.........
@jimm619 saidthe US producing its on oil/gas has nothing to do with europe dumbass

@Mott-The-Hoople
And OF COURSE you wouldn't even NOTICE the 20 cent drop in gas today and that was due to Biden releasing 60 million barrels of oil reserves, which is less than 10% so that is not a worry, losing reserves, but that is about 2 weeks supply and it was seen the very next day but I am QUITE sure you will poo poo that because Biden can NEVER do ANYTHING right, right?
