But our CIA did support Hussein in a hit on the Prime Minister of Iraq, which actually failed, but the Baathists got him soon after anyway.
USA is a fine country, don't think I have another opinion. But it has certainly a tendecy to help the wrong people with arms. Also that it sees enemies where there are no enemies.

I see the parallel between Iraq and Afganistan.

I see a closer paralled between Afghanistan and Viet Nam. The loss of life we have suffered in Iraq is no where near the lives we lost in Viet Nam or the Russians lost in Afghanistan.

Exactly. Russia invaded Afghanistan and the US provided support against them. So what? You make it sound like a bad thing.
Actually, Russia was asked to step in by the Afghan government to help fight the Mujahadeen forces.

And the US, in their usual naievity helped their enemy's enemy, assuming that this must then be a friend.

Indeed, various CIA operatives on the ground (back then) and a few in higher places actually warned the government that sinking 1.000.000.000 dollars into the Mujahadeen probably wasn't such a great idea...

But anything to defeat the Soviet Union was good.
And you know, you can always create new enemies when you need to sell more guns and out-source more contracts...
