Firearms deaths are a fixture in American life.
There were 1.5 million of them between 1968 and 2017 - that's higher than the number of soldiers killed in every US conflict since the American War for Independence in 1775.
In 2020 alone, more than 45,000 Americans died at the end of a barrel of a gun, whether by homicide or suicide, more than any other year on record. The figure represents a 25% increase from five years prior, and a 43% increase from 2010.

The country with the second highest gun to citizen ratio is Yemen. They have 52.8 guns per person. Canada has 34.7 guns per inhabitant.
The US has 120.5 guns per in habitant.

The UK and Australia (where guns are illegal) have very low gun-related killings (percentage of homicides committed: 4% and 13😵.
Canada is 37% and the US is 79%.

Mass shootings, according to FBI figures, are getting ever larger (more deaths per shooting).

52% of Americans want stricter gun control.
91% of denocrats want more gun control.
The gun lobby far outspends the gun control lobby per year.

With such an obvious causation (more guns = more gun related deaths), why do republicans want less gun control or to keep the status quo?

It can’t be the arms manufacturers on this one. Their main source of income is war. Guns are costly to make and last a long time. Ammo? Private shooting can’t be a large factor in the profits.

Obviously my goto would be that they have small cocks and want to compensate.
But in all reality, that’s more of a joke than a real opinion.

It’s obviously not for hunting (not that many people hunt and you wouldn’t need that many guns anyway) and it can’t be for shooting range fun, because you don’t need that many guns… and very few homicides take place on shooting ranges.

So, what then? Fear?
Or just a love of owning guns? And if that’s it, how come that fancy is split down party political lines? That’s just too much of a coincidence for a fetish.

If it’s just about “a right”, how come it’s so divided down a political boundary?

Why latch on to one amendement and not another?
