If I'm recalling correctly, the US has been the leading maker of the best adhesives. Just think of how many items around you rely on glues and the like.

Corrugated paper is another item that we manufacture in large amounts.

We still lead in tobacco products. (oh joy😞)

Not those of us who have opposed these kinds of business practices but, in essence, have what you describe foistered upon us - often against our will because there are little alternatives. The issue, however, is far more complex than the simple sides that you or I are discussing.
