I don't know about anyone else here from the US, but this is just embarrasing. Venezuela was flat broke and bankrupt just a few years ago and they can still offer discounted oil and gas to the citizens of a storm ravaged state. Something our own government and our own oil companies have refused to do.

An act consistent with his policies in Venezuela.

Its a pity that the right wingers can write off somebody who does good things for the poor as a troublemaking commie.

I don't know why, but for some reason this story really bothered me this morning Ragnorak. I just can't believe we're taking charity from Venezuela for God's sake.

We should be giving them help, not the other way around. We've got CEO's that sit on 50 million dollars worth of stock options in this country while they lay off workers and beg for corporate welfare to subsidize a new office building they want to build.

And now the people of Mass are getting discounted oil from...

Oh forget it. My head hurts.

But see Howard, I can't just blame capitalism, because I know capitalism works. I see it first hand every day. Hell it works just fine for me and millions of Americans.

This situation shows off the ugly side of capitalism. The side where people horde what they have and refuse to budge or share with those in need.

Oil companies in America just reported an all time high for profits in their third quarter earnings. And now, immediately after that report, I see this story on CNN about Mass taking handouts from a foreign nation. I'm appalled. Are we so greedy in the US that we can't even take care of our own now?

Uuugh. My head still hurts.

Ted Kennedy and John Kerry probably gave Chaves a hummer for the oil.

WHy not, Rag? The left wingers consistently write off the good things the USA does for the poor in other countries as troublemaking capitalist expansionism.

Does it work though, wib?

Your country has one of the widest gaps between the haves and the have-nots in the entire world.
Look at the response to the hurricane in Louisianna for evidence of this and how a capitalistic society responds (or not) when the have-nots need their lives saving!

Your country goes to war on a false premise. The real reason was to plunder resources and for Bushwit and his cronies to make a fast million bucks or two from the rebuilding process.

Hell, your president even reneges on a dela to sign the Kyoto treaty and hence helps sell the world up the river so that he can guarantee a few more million bucks support from the oil companies.

You ask ;
"Are we so greedy in the US that we can't even take care of our own now?"
Absolutely, you are. And this is true of any capitalist society.
If it wasn't, then all the corporations would employ good old fashioned home grown labourers, and take care of its own society, rather than exploit cheap labour in slave house conditions abroad.

Good! Anything to embarrass the gov't into doing what they should have done in the first place is fine with me. Maybe Chavez will build a wall/fence betwen the US and Mexico to stem illegal immigration...we could call it the "Chavez Fence"..or he could send Venezuelan soldiers to guard our borders...I'm all for it!

Yeah I notice how well off the Australia takes care of their poor native people.
