Why do the AP and Reuters refuse to use the word "fanatic" in their news stories about Islamic militants behaving badly? Are they afraid of invoking the unthinkable?

Because it would make them sound like the bad guys. AP and
al-Rueters don't think they're bad guys. With them, moral double bookkeeping is hidden behind moral relativism.

Maybe they are simply trying to maintain objectivity in bringing you the news. If you or I think they're fanatics, that's our business, but the news folks leave it to us to decide that.

I would really rather they do it that way. I'm not much of a fan of partisan news; even when the side they choose resembles my own beliefs.
