We all know that a lot of (young) people use drugs. We often talk about the health consequenses of drug use or whether cannabis or other drugs should be legalised or not.
..... but we seldom talk about why (young) people use drugs.
Why do you use drugs and why do you think others use drugs ?
Any thoughts ?

The majority do it because there friends do it, They think its cool to do drugs.
Then theres the ones who do it because its illegal (to teenagers, something illegal is immediately appealing)
the government could. and would never do it. But if they made drugs legal, i bet half as many people would actually do them.

On what occasions or during which activities do you use drugs ?
Are there different drugs for different purposes, different activities ?
Originally posted by ivanhoeWell, a lot of young people probably try them just to be cool, to fit in and out of sheer curiosity..

I think their illegal status makes it even more cool too..
I remember when I did some travelling, in most countries i met people who would smoke cannabis.. Strangly enough, most dutch people who i met tended to have tried it when they were younger, had some fun but grew out of it and looked on it as juvenille..
Which is the opposite to a lot of other nationalities where it was illegal and was viewed as mature, cool and an adult thing..
Which lead me to believe it should be legalised.
As for why people do drugs.. It varies vastly depending on the drug.

But the best drug of all is the sea breeze. It truly clears the head. I try and get a little bit of this drug at least 5 times a week.
There are several issues why people take drugs, and why people do not. It is incredibly hard to try and educate someone in the ways of drugs until they have not only tried them, but tried them and accepted them.
There is certain stuff that I do, and I do it because I am bored (please don’t read that as I have no hobbies or girlfriend, I have a very active life: my mind just doesn't like idling) or because I can bond with friends in ways which would not happen otherwise.
I have long since learned that you should NEVER try and influence someone to try and take drugs - it can well end up hurting you as well as them. Instead now I only try and talk to and educate the person with how it works for me. It rarely works, communicating such a difficult subject when the individual has no prior experience is incredibly difficult, but occasionally it does, and at these times I am please that the person has tried something in a happy atmosphere with reliable people to hand.
We have to look out for each other, especially with something as serious as drugs, sure question the reason why people do them, even question mine if you dont, but please realise - I can handle them (so far), others can't - even if they say the can...the difficulty is in deciding how to help the person if you dont believe the can handle them.
It's such a difficult subject.

Cannabis == relaxing
Ectasy == clubbing/dancing/partying
cocaine == socialising, clubbing.
mushrooms == out of mind experience
LSD == same as mushrooms, hence the nickname "trip" as in taking a trip to another plane.
Heroin + Crack + Meth
These I (and i stress I) would regard as the really hard drugs/problem drugs. Users of these are generally the people get addicted to and have to rob to feed their habit causing widespread crime.. The others are more middle class drugs and cause no where near as much damage to society, IMHO.
edit - my crap spelling
