I think that's the point.
Mistakenly saying WW2 instead of WW1 is excusable.
But he is just making stuff up.
And he is stupid enough to think he can get away with it.

The problem isn’t that he accidentally said WW2, the problem is that he consistantly calls it the great pandemic of 1917.

First of all, it was the great war... not the great pandemic.
Second of all, it was in 1918.
