Would Putin accept defeat if it came to that, or would he just not give a crap that thousands of Russian soldiers die and just double up the army to 400 thou or so?

@sonhouse I think he will use small tactical nuclear weapons before he surrenders. Maybe Russian troops will refuse kill. However, I think Putin is also employing mercenaries. How will he pay the troops?

Communist countries used to send in their less favored forces first intending them to die so they don't have to feed them and as a punishment for any number of possible failures in the eyes of the dictator. It's also a way to use up near obsolescent military equipment while getting some use out of it.

Putin may just hold some new land...or all of it...or none of it...

I think we are in a new age of disposable soldiers...
War will soon be the norm.

Yes. Western capitalist countries send in their best up front as a rule.

I noticed a comparison of Ukraine's vs Russia's tanks in the battle and the Ukranians had newer tanks - T80 vs Russia's T72s.

Russia has better tanks than that.

Wars and military occupation
are expensive propositions....
As Marauder pondered, what is
Putin's end game?

The Nazis and Japanese sent in their best up front too but they fought to the death which caused erosion of their military machines over time.

Western countries send in their best but rotate them out before they die so they can instruct the next generation of soldiers and maintain high quality and morale over time.

They also retire old weapons and equipment instead of sending them out to be destroyed in battle.

A large death toll of grunts would give him a good reason to take to Russia to break out the big guns. I foresee a false flag event in Poland soon, maybe with Captured Russian equipment. Call me a cynic.

What do you mean by "defeat"? It seems most unlikely the Ukrainians can defeat the Russians in a conventional military sense.

I read this article (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/russia-ukraine-talks-in-belarus-end-as-explosions-heard-in-kyiv/ar-AAUp1fY?li=BBorjTa) which mentions that the Russians have captured the city of Berdyansk on the Sea of Azoz and are making strenuous efforts to seize Kharkov in the northeast. Looking at a map of Ukraine (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ukraine/@47.1111202,29.0850086,6.75z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x40d1d9c154700e8f:0x1068488f64010!8m2!3d48.379433!4d31.1655799) it appears that if the Russians could link up those two forces, they'd have control of much of Eastern Ukraine which is primarily populated by Russian speakers. That might be the primary objective (perhaps with the added idea of pushing from the Crimea to the southern bend of the Dniester(?)) and the push on Kyiv might be a feint.

EDIT: My bad, that's the Dnieper.

Interesting, I would never have seen that. My AF stuff was on bombers๐Ÿ™‚
Anyway, I was curious if anyone mentioned the advanced anti tank missiles Trump reluctantly gave to Ukraine, are they all gone already, or have they been used in battle?
If not, was that a waste of a half bil $US?

So if Pukin decides to send in the rust buckets first I guess he figures the enemy wastes that much more ammo on what to Pukin is expendable crap.
Nice way to think about war.
