I would like to give the explanation given by the person interviewed in the opening post of the "Slippery Slope in children's euthanasia" thread

"...... the culture of death. What culture is that?

Father Miranda: It is not saying that our society is thirsty for blood and death; this is not so.

Rather, it is a culture in which death is seen as a solution to problems that we do not know how to handle in another way -- "

The explanation I myself used to employ in discussions here at RHP was: "It is a culture in which people chose killing to solve problems."

I seriously think we should be happy that people want to kill themselves.
Seriously. There are three sorts of people who kill themselves:

- Very ill people
These people suck up resources like Americans suck up propaganda. If they want to kill themselves, then we can spend more money on children, roads, free distribution of marijuana and lots of other very cool things.

- People with no other way out of a situation
Maybe, just maybe, we should spend time changing these god-awful situations that people can't get out of to cut back on suicides, instead of telling people that they should suffer that which they really don't want to anymore!

- People too stupid to waste the planet's resources on
Drug addicts, republicans, religious people, muggers, rapists and what-not.

See! We shouldn't be saving these people. Let them go! It's not like you're killing them or anything. They want to go! Encourage them....

I hail the culture of death and...

Wait. I'll be right back, I have to do the dishes.

In addition to what I allready said I will add that the term "Culture of Death" usually entails choosing for euthanasia, abortion, infanticide and suicide as acceptable means of solving problems.

Choosing for war can be a part of a culture of death, however the reasons for waging war usually do not entail killing as the main goal, unless of course in the case of genocide.

Wouldn't you also include the death penalty in the above list?

I strongly oppose the death penalty.

However, death penalty entails protecting society from people who have done considerable harm. It is an issue that entails punishment of a person wo has committed a crime, a person who's been find to be guilty.

Whether the implementing of the death penalty is always intrinsically evil as such is a question that needs to be investigated.

There is a division in US population that is rather peculiar in my eyes. Those who oppose abortion, euthanasia and assisted suicide usually advocate capital punishment and those opposing capital punishment usually advocate abortion, euthanasia and assisted suicide. Some go even further and advocate infanticide and killing certain groups of handicapped people and the mentally ill.

I have opened a new thread called "Capital Punishment and the Culture of Death" to discuss this particular division and the related issues.
