Abstinence is the only fully safe and 100% effective method of birth control.
In conclusion, abstinence is not 100% effective. Only death guarantees 100% safety.

How often has this happened to you then? 😉
My wife uses the IUD. I'm guessing this is what you mean by "coil," although I think it actually looks like a "T." It's a one time payment and is extremely effective up to about 8 years. There are no hormonal issues, although periods are a little heavier, and "forgetting" is not an issue. She claims that after a slight discomfort during installation, she has never experienced any other pain from it. Finally, while back in the day IUD's were found to increase cancer risk, new materials have long since gotten around that problem.
One thing about the IUD though, it's not recommended for those who plan to have more than one sexual partner. Generally, it is recommended to married couples.
One point about abstinence: It is a "heads I win, tails doesn't count" situation. While it cannot be reasonably disputed that if you do not have sex you will not get pregnant, studies show that abstinence-only methods to preventing unwanted pregnancy are uneffective and can result in a higher rate of STD's. This is because while many kids have every intention of avoiding sex, many succumb to temptation in the moment. When they do, they are far less prepared for the encounter, since they have not made contingency plans. Also abstinence is really about not choosing to have sex. Pregnancies can and do arise from cases of unwanted sex (both violent, as well as, less overtly violent, cohersive date rape). Condoms won't help in this case, but the Pill, shots, and morning-after pills do.
I will impress upon my daughter the benefits of remaining sexually inactive through high school (not because you should save yourself for anyone in particular, but because of the risks to your emotions and career). I will also stress the importance of other birth control methods, and do everything in my power to ensure that she has a condom in her purse and/or goes on the pill. If she chooses to have sex early, she should at least have all the correct equipment available and be comfortable with using it.
Finally, abortion is not a contraceptive and thus is not relevant to the thread title, but I it does apply to the statement "Abstinence is the only 100% effective birth control method," abortions do a pretty damn good job of preventing unwanted births as well. Now I know the statement also included "100% safe." Even though abortions are very safe procedures, they cannot by there nature be 100% safe.
