The cops were instigating the violence. Shag doody read an NPR headline posted a link to a vid but they hadn't cropped it enough, it showed a protestor being pushed (maybe not for the first time) he pushed the cop back and the situation was immediately quelled, not by the cops but by fellow protestors.

A man enters from behind the police lines talks conversationally to a couple of the police, then hollers like an ijit in the worst acting impression of a protestor possible, crosses to the protestors, turns around and pushes back from the direction he just came, pushing through the police line that collapses like a house of cards, leading the other protestors in the direction of the sacred room.

* Yes it seems strange. Yes the guy should at very least be identified and chased down (and he might be already I don't know).
* And there were people already in the building, who clearly did not belong there and at very least trespassed, but probably worse. That the police tried to calm don the situation, I for one can't hold against them.

This is not the first time this happened. I the leadup to WW2 there were thousands of Nazi's who wanted the US go come in on the side of Germany and they had a huge following just like Trump except today Trump has MILLIONS of followers not thousands like in 1940.
