Who decides to go to war in the US?

Debates

1 edit

Just out of interest…

I keep hearing things like: “trump says this and trump says that….” And that the message is unclear if he’s going to support Israel in their war.

And now I read that trump’s press secretary,… a gorgeous woman by the way; although I do suspect that listening to her in bed might be detremental to the sex drive…says that the president will decide whether or not to join the Israeli war within 2 weeks.

Okay..
But the US has a congress; senate and House of Representatives.

Who, in the US, actually has the mandate to go to war?
Is it the president? Or is it parliament?

I also assume that there can be a differemce between executive action and parliamentary action, based on security issues and priority.

But, if the US isn’t in danger and the decision can wait weeks, is this truly a presidential mandate? Or is it a mandate for Congress (however that role is divided)?

Genuinly interested.

Politics might be a show but wars?

Iran's been building a nuke since the 1950s. It's hard to argue this is an immediate threat.

You're the one sticking your foot in your mouth over a "fast imminent war" that's based on a 75 year old piece of knowledge.

Sure thing boss. Obama came along 55 years after Iran declared their intentions of making a nuke. Not a short timeline either. Obama has no current say in the matter.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think we are still operating from the 2001 Authorization of Military Force (AUMF) which basically has war on autopilot as long as there is some way to link it to terrorism, and the President wants to use military force. It's not a declaration of war, but close enough.

Oh, she can spank me with her bible any day she wants…

The US Constitution vests the authority to declare war in Congress, not the president. The president can take emergency actions, but ultimately it’s Congress which controls the pursestrings. In the present political climate, we must assume that the Republican controlled Congress will do Trump’s bidding.

Of course, the US hasn't formally declared war on a country since Pearl Harbor in 1942. Isn't that great? 83 years of peace!

Seriously, are you an idiot?

His deal with Iran to stop enriching uranium was the ONLY deal with Iran that ever worked. And your "stable genius" pulled us out of that deal, giving them the green light to start enriching uranium again. With a month, they had a roomful of chinese centrifuges, of three different grades.

Typical head-in-the-sand Trumpublican. I wonder exactly how long he's been a Russian agent. At least since 2016, maybe earlier. He's certainly been anti-American earlier than that.

And try to keep your racism in your pants. No one wants to see that.
