1. The U.S., could make clear that mainland China would pay a heavy price, in terms of boycotts of its products and services worldwide, if it were to attempt to take the island by force.
EoT: I am very sure the Chinese took this into consideration long ago when they were laying out their plan.

2. It could arm Taiwan to the teeth, so that mainland Chinese forces would pay a heavy price in men and materiel, if China were to attempt to take the island by force.
EoT: Oh, I am sure the US/UK will do all of that. That won't stop China, my opinion
@moonbus -
3. It could position warships in the straits to hinder a sea invasion.
EoT: If the US had a naval battle with China right now in the South China sea, the US would LOSE.
American flat tops would be taken out by ballistic missiles shot from mainland China. Fact.
@moonbus -
4. It could let China have the ground physically, and offer to evacuate as many Taiwanese as wish to leave and give them expedited asylum status to resettle in the USA. A sort of scorched island policy.
EoT; 😆 that option will never do for the Taiwanese.
@earl-of-trumps saidLet's say we enter into a war. You do realize this will drag on for years, right? War is not like in the movies where's there's a climatic battle and the credits roll.
@shavixmir
It ain't "warmongering", doodoo head, it's "defending". China is warmongering
Trying to defend Taiwan can only end with the U.S. withdrawing after wasting trillions of dollars. China will never cede to the U.S. The only way wrench Taiwan from China is a direct war, which would be catastrophic.
@earl-of-trumps saidWell the option of my kids and grandkids getting nuked so that the US can strut its stuff on the wrong side of the pacific is a non starter for me, so please leave the uk out of this particular US mid life crisis and I don’t think the Taiwanese people will thank you for fighting an all out war on their territory either.

@kevcvs57 saidNow, Kev... I think if it comes to a vote, the UK people will protect Taiwan.

My opinion, BTW. I could be wrong.
EDIT to add:
In no way shape or manner was America's seizure of Hawaii legal.

The post that was quoted here has been removedNote the idiotically racist snd utterly stupid ethnically Chinese duchess once again completely fails to comprehend or blatantly misrepresents what is being said by another poster.
It was in order to save BRITISH FACE so they could walk away with the pretence of a deal under their belt because either way they were going to be walking away. The naive duchess surely believes that the British foreign office trusted that this ‘arrangement’ was going to survive for its 50yrs or even cared.
@earl-of-trumps saidYou would definitely be wrong in my opinion, what’s in it for us earl? We only have about 70,000 regular soldiers and a lot less frontline infantry. How long do you think a government that introduced conscription in order to stop one group of Chinese people invading another group of Chinese people would last, they would probably lose their majority in a vote of confidence on the matter.
Now, Kev... I think if it comes to a vote, the UK people will protect Taiwan.

At the most the west may offer strategic and logistical support for the short time that Taiwan could hold off any serious intent by the mainland.
It may in the end cause the west and many other nations to bite the bullet and seriously detach themselves from the Chinese economy but even that is unlikely given the economic hardship that would reek on the west.

**IF war breaks out**
It doesn't say, "who wants to nuke China?"

What was in it for the Brits when they attacked Germany for attacking Belgium?
