Seriously. I look at these forums sometimes, and wonder about how little knowledge I have compared to some of the people in these forums. Then I encounter posts by RBHill and BlindFaith, and I am baffled. What determines whether someone will be smarter than others? Is it their ambition to learn? Reading as much as they can about a subject? Is it something genetic, something that we dont have a choice about that leads them to want to learn more? and if it is, then should people get angry at others for their stupidity? Or is it something else? How is it determined whether one person has a higher rate for learning and analyzing things better than others? I know that some can retain facts quicker and better than others. But that's not what I'm really asking here. What I am asking is: is it possible for a person to be able to learn things only to a certain point, only to a certain capability, as opposed to another person who might be able to understand the idea better? Or is it simply a matter of applying one's mind to understand these ideas and concepts through repetitive study? I'd also appreciate an explanation for whatever your answers may be. Thank you in advance.

I've been wondering lately about old age. People say things like it's harder to learn a new language or music as you grow older and that you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I wonder how much people believe that just because it's so entrenched. I think there should be forums where this is negated and people, who have hopefully gained maturity and understanding of the world around them, can take on new things for their own sake and possibly give even more to society.
One thing I have learned is that there are some ppl who appear dum, but are actually smarter then the rest of us, its not a good idea to judge them, Blah, My mom used to keep mentally retarded kids, and you would be suprised how smart some of em are, this one was a fabalous Chess player, and I know another one who would watch football games all day on TV, and so far, I think the last 8 superbowls guessed corecctly who would win, and they did win, alot of ppl ask him whos gonna win now, then they bet alot on money on it. this was a couple years ago, I havnt seen him in a while,
If one lack in one area then they gain in another, enough said,
bai

I think it's pretty obvious genetics is a factor. Desire leads to focussing on increasing one's intelligence, which is important, and skill and experience lead to greater success and efficiency as they do with any endeavor.

ps. that's why I'm so clever (i.e. because I eat fish, dummy)

You like to eat fish.
You have skill and experience eating fish.
Now STFU, idiot. You so stoopid.
Well, they say that once you get older it is harder to learn things because since the cells in the brain are older, they do mitosis much slower (i.e. devide) and new connections are created much slower, not to talk about the ones who are being destroyed over time.
I think being "smart" is genetic but mostly educational. I mean, if the person's parents have taught him to learn and he is in a good (enough) society, he is likely to be smarter.
But as one great man said once: "The amount of intelligence in the world is constant, the population keeps growing..."
Here is another question: Is humanity getting smarter or dumber?
